Theme: Diplomatic Marriage

Summary:
or, one hundred and thirty-three principles of the Gusu Lan, pertaining to the state of marriage

***

He bows to Wei Wuxian, sword in hand, sleeves falling properly. Wei Wuxian bows in return, and the sect leaders begin the opening courtesies, and for all of ten minutes Lan Wangji is under the impression that he is betrothed to a boy who is perfectly normal and acceptable apart from an unfortunate tendency to fidget with his clothes.

That impression does not last.

Reccer's Notes: This fic starts out with the premise that Jiang Yanli is not the only eligible candidate for a politically expedient betrothal between two powerful clans in order to shore-up and enhance their individual & combined power bases during a time of increasing turbulence when every alliance matters. From there, Fahye takes us through the roller coaster Lan Wangji might have experienced in drama canon if he'd been betrothed to Wei Wuxian from the start, and throughout the coming war. This canon-divergent fix-it fic works beautifully on many levels: in its spot-on character voices, its canon-consistent pining, its clever twists and turns taking the core of the plot in new directions, and in demonstrating how even small shifts during key moments driven by a careful word, a thoughtful action, might have changed the outcomes for nearly everyone. (what if people communicated, lived their principles, and made better choices! indeed!) I will be re-reading this one again and again.
