I've always imagined fancake to be one of those rainbow colored cakes. Always wanted it to be busy, and diverse, and welcoming, and delicious. And while I've done my best to provide a safe space for a wide range of reccers and readers to hang out and do their thing, when it came to leading by example I could only do so much. I'm only one person and represent one person's very specific tastes.

This is where you all come in! Our little comm has grown exponentially (beyond my wildest dreams!) and I know we have subscribers from hundreds of different fandoms that can (and already do!) pick up where I leave off. This post is just to remind you guys (and inform our newer members) that you can do that. You can take over and post a ton of recs. You can go ahead and do your pimping. You can bring over your friends and your fandom. We want you to.

What do we want to accomplish?

We want fancake to grow as a whole, not just in subscribers. We want more reccers, in more fandoms, reccing a more diverse set of recs each month. It's not hard to do. When fancake was created some 20 months ago, it had a grand total of 50 members, all of whom hailed from the American Idol RPF fandom. Look where we've come in that time. Imagine where we can go with all of you helping us out.

What can you do to help?

• You can post recs!
  
  I know it's not for everyone, but if you're ever so inclined... It's really easy. And if you're not sure about something and want to talk it out, I'm always around. Send me a PM, an email, drop me a comment anywhere - literally, I'm tracking everything here, so just comment on any post and I'll be all over it.
  
  We're open to all fandoms, all genres, and all different types of fanwork. If what you have in mind hasn't been recced here before - well, that's all the more reason to rec it now! If you wish we had more gen recs, more drabble recs, or more fanart recs, you can make that happen.
  
  Remember that each member gets to rec up to 90 recs for every round (3 recs a day). That's enough to make the most under-appreciated fandom a star - with just one (very dedicated) reccer. Is it technically possible to post that many themed recs in that short a time? I don't even know. But I'm all for it if you want to try!


• You can recruit reccers!
  
  You can pimp fancake in your favorite fandom comms. You can spread the word that we welcome new reccers with open arms. You can tell your flist how easy it is to post recs here, how there's no pressure, no sign-ups. Anyone can drop by and post a rec anytime.
  
  You can tell them we're all for new fandoms, for rare pairings, for under-represented genres.
  
  Short of actually hiring a more diverse set of reccers that's the best any of us can do. Pimp until we can pimp no more.
  
  (* The reason the mods aren't doing said pimping is because the point is to have more of what you want. You know what you want better than us, and you know where to get it better than us. So we need your help to bring that here.)

bestthingever is fancake's sister comm, also run by us, but it's not getting the same kind of love this comm gets. *sadface mod* The rules are pretty similar, but instead of recommending fics that fit a theme, at bestthingever we recommend new fics. Namely, fics we love that are no older than three months. That way, you don't have a whole bunch of old fics cluttering your reading page, and you get to keep up with great new fics posted in fandoms you no longer keep a close eye on.

In order to work the way it was meant, the comm needs more people recommending fics in more fandoms. If we get enough reccers, we hope to one day have a fairly reliable noticeboard of great new fic there. And with delicious pretty much unusable right now, the prospect seems even more awesome than it did when we first built the comm.

Spread the word if you like the idea, and come join. You all already know we're a friendly bunch.

The world does not need any more rec comms, we hear you. But our new sister comm is unique (we hope!) in the way that it's for "fresh" recs. A comm where only new stories are recced.
