Summary: i really like putting these 3 next to each other. there’s a lot of cool throughlines / parallels / contrasts that are SO fun to think about… like their relationship to (doing) violence!

Reccer's Notes: Gorgeous fanart of Sylvi Bullet's three main player characters from Friends at the Table's sci-fi seasons! I love the theme of violence that humanmorph is exploring here - all three of these characters were raised to do violence in one way or another, and all three are on a journey of grappling with that - and I just love to see these characters all together, too. They're all queer, they all have complicated relationships with their families of origin, and at least two of the three (Millie and Echo) are, like their player, trans or nonbinary.

Despite their many similarities, though, they're very different characters whose differences serve to illuminate one another, and humanmorph does a wonderful job highlighting these similarities and tensions with the colours and symbolism in this piece. I especially love how Millie, foregrounded before Partizan, and Echo, looking over the Quire system, are contrasted by Cori, in the middle, standing happily below her god's many watchful eyes. She's still comfortable playing the part of the military poster child in a way Millie never was, and Echo never had to be. I first saw this piece when the artist posted it nearly five months ago, and I'm still overwhelmed by feelings about these three characters every time I see it!

Yeah. That.

Reccer's Notes: Strange Empire was a weird little Canadian show about three women fighting to survive in a frontier town, including a Metis woman (played by Cara Gee) and a mixed-race woman married to the town's corrupt sheriff/owner/patriarch. They never became friends in the show, but there were some promising sparks and generous tropeyness, and this vid does a great job reminding me how much I shipped them. This is gorgeous. Reccer's Notes: A heartwarming and poignant short fic for this fandom, exploring the relationship between Ricky, an initially unwanted foster kid, and Hec, a grief-stricken ex-con, who rescue each other after Bella, Hec's partner and Ricky's foster mother, dies. They were both "strays" taken in by Bella, and after her death they have to figure out how to go on - in the midst of a series of hilarious and chaotic adventures. The movie by Taika Waititi's lovely, and this story, containing lots of excellent nods to the movie and great characterisation, is a perfect post-canon treat.

Summary: Chakotay and Tuvok develop a tentative friendship, set against the backdrop of a storytelling group which has grown up spontaneously on Voyager. As Kathryn Janeway tries to adjust to the changes if Voyager created by the presence of the story telling circle, she also tries to deal with her own beliefs about the nature of command... and to help Tom Paris through a rough spot in his own life.

Reccer's Notes: A remarkable "braided novel" of 8 novels and novellas. Too sprawling (in the grand sense) in scale and reach to reduce to a mere synopsis; let us just say that this is what Voyager could have been if TPTB had been willing to seriously deal with the implications of two enemy crews depending on one another, far from home, in a dangerous quadrant.  With gripping plots and wonderful characterizations, Macedon and Peg tackled issues of faith, community, alienation and belonging, honest conflict between Maquis and Starfleet, and the realities of life far from home and safety, and all with discretion and grace. This series really explores what life and community are like on board Voyager in a way few fics do, making it into a community that feels real and has depth to it.

And it fits this rec category because Macedon (aka Little Otter) really leaned into Chakotay's heritage. The central premise that kicks off the fic is "what if Chakotay started a talking/storytelling circle in the pattern of several of the Native American tribes of the midwest?"

Story Links:  Talking Stick/Circle

Also, Macedon wrote another wonderful Trek fic about an OC with Native American heritage who, after some trauma, goes to the reservation to heal, which I recced only 6 months ago. It's called Wisdom and Beauty and the rec is here.

"It has been many years since the Fire Nation raids on the Southern Water Tribe declared the decimation of the Southern Water Tribe’s bending population complete, and scurried off to celebrate the ghastly accomplishment of ripping an entire generation of benders from their homes on their own sandy, sun scorched shores. Since then, they had adjusted to hunting with clubs and bows and boomerangs the way their ancestors did before the moon taught them the push and pull of the waves.

Even Katara, the last southern waterbender and first of her generation, wields a whalebone weapon today instead of her element."

Theme:
Indigenous characters, Female characters, Family, Fanvids, Gen

Summary:
I'm posting the bulk of the Notes from the video here as there isn't a summary as such.
Rabbit-Proof Fence is the true story of Molly Craig, who, in 1931, at 14, was taken from her mother in Jigalong, a depot on one of the fences that were being constructed across the continent in an attempt to keep marauding rabbits from destroying the western farmlands. Along with her half-sister Daisy, 8, and cousin Gracie Fields, she was taken to the Moore River Native Settlement in Western Australia.

"I would not hesitate to separate any half-caste from its aboriginal mother, no matter how frantic momentary grief might be at the time," wrote one "protector". "They soon forget their offspring." He maintained it was just like removing a pup from a bitch. The film would show the terrified children sprinting across stony wasteland in a futile attempt to escape the police, distraught mothers wailing in the dust, and an aged granny battering her head with a stone in impotent frustration. It would show the girls in a cage as they are transported by train to their new home and a culture of flogging and solitary confinement for those who failed to appreciate what the white man was doing for them.

One day, when the coming rainstorm would hide their tracks, Molly, Daisy and Gracie set off for home, traipsing across the desert, scavenging from farmers and aborigine hunters, cooking what little meat they could obtain over an open fire, close to collapse with hunger, heat and exhaustion. For long parts of the journey the girls followed the rabbit-proof fence.

After walking for nine weeks, Molly and Daisy were reunited with their mother (though Gracie was recaptured). They disappeared into the desert, just the sort of uplifting ending the film needed. They are still living in the Jigalong area, 600 miles north-east of Perth - two days on a bus, followed by a couple of hours in a truck.

Reccer's Notes: Even though this maybe isn't a conventional fanwork, I wanted to rec it as it very much fits the theme, and as it's very powerful, and records the "Stolen Generation" - something that should never be forgotten. With the music, and the choice and editing of clips from the movie to compress the essence of the movie's story into a brief video, it's exactly like a music-based fanvid. Watch to the very end, for the happy ending and some comfort, after all that hurt.

(Yes, it's in the text of the movie; it's how he introduces himself to Diana, in Siksiká which was left untranslated, so white viewers wouldn't get it unless they read an article by a native person, as I did.) Theme: Indigenous Characters

Summary: she's here for the job!

Reccer's Notes: I love this piece. Marilyn's expression is hopeful and sweet and I like the way the muted colors of the background really make her stand out as the most colorful thing in town. Her cardigan is amazing.

Happy New Year! Our first theme of 2024 is Indigenous characters!

This round is for fanworks that center Indigenous characters, whether canonical, racebent, or original. If your usual fandoms don't have any Indigenous characters, I encourage you to seek out ones that do, and if you have recommendations for shows, books, movies, and other media that feature Indigenous characters, please come share them in the comments!

The tag for this round is: theme: indigenous characters

If you're just joining us, be sure to check out our policy on content notes. Content notes aren't required, but they're nice to include in your recs, especially if a fanwork has untagged content that readers may wish to know about in advance.
