Theme: food & cooking, bisexual/pansexual characters, polyamory, series

Summary:
part 1: you do not have to be good.
Come hell or high water, Eliot is going to figure this out.

part 2: your place in the family of things
He's here, he's queer, he's sort of getting used to it, or, Eliot realizes that he still has some work to do on understanding himself. With bonus new!team members.

Reccer's Notes:
Bisexual/pansexual Characters
This story features an Eliot Spencer who might have, in the back of his mind, known that he wasn't fully straight, but didn't let it sink in until he got close to having a relationship with Parker and Hardison. Growing up with the background homophobia of his childhood, and then the Don't Ask, Don't Tell of the military, he didn't think about it, didn't apply labels such as "bisexual" to himself. So realizing that he indeed wants a relationship with Parker and with Hardison leads to some serious reconsidering and soul-searching as he works through that. It is very much a "coming out later in life" story. The first part focuses on coming out to himself and his partners, and the second part focuses on finding his place in the wider queer community.

Food & Cooking
These stories feature a copious amount of food metaphors in the likes of "bretzels", actually co-owning a brewpub, and Eliot working through his feelings in late-night visits to the kitchen, and showing Parker and Hardison he loves them by cooking them food. The second part of the series especially is set in the brewpub as kind of a home base and develops the location as a legit place of business. For example Eliot creates longdrinks for the pub that convey his feelings, and they each are described at the end of chapter, it's delightful.

Polyamory
I like how the story portrays it as a multidimensional three-way-relationship: Each of the duos have their own relationship, and also the three of them function together in a way that's different than their two-way-relationships. Much like in canon, actually. Eliot is the POV character, and he has important scenes with Parker along, with Hardison alone, and with them both.
The first part is about figuring out how they work as a relationship together, about Eliot figuring out his queerness in relation to Parker and Hardison. The second part is about how that interacts with the outside world, portrayed through some very nicely flashed out side characters from the brewpub as well as another group of (rather young, very queer) criminals they're recruiting. In the second part especially, the focus is on their polyamory in that outsiders learn about it, and especially Eliot learns to show his love for his people.

Theme: food & cooking, casefic, competence, outsider pov

Summary:
She was only here for a long weekend, using this convention as an excuse to see Alice for the first time in over a year, or using Alice as an excuse to get away for a convention, or using both as a reason to finally take a vacation, because it was about damn time.
At least, that was the original plan.

Reccer's Notes:
Peggy Milbank is a side character who appears in 2 episodes: once when Parker's alias "Alice White" gets called in for jury duty, and once when Parker, Sophie and Tara sneak into a ball at an embassy for an event where Peggy does the catering.

This fic has her meeting the team once more, and has her involved in a job in Portland when they investigate a sketchy business man who drives independent food cart owners out of business, not shying away from inflicting violence on them in the process.

While the team does their thing, Peggy offers to take over the food cart, and does so with remarkable competence - learning a whole new cuisine on the fly. Food plays a big role in the whole story, because of their case, but also because now there are several people in one place who care a lot about food. It's also about a community of food cart owners. And just like Eliot found a way out of his violent life by learning how to cook, there's a side plot in this story how he does that for others too.

While the ship Eliot/Parker/Hardison isn't the main focus, it is definitely in the background, and Peggy's perspective is a really nice outsider POV on them, so I tagged it as such as well.

Reccer's Notes:
Maggie visits the brewpub looking for help regarding a client of hers. It's lovely how the food she is served there acts as kind of character description for the relationship between her, Eliot, Hardison and Parker.

Reccer's Notes:
Do you remember Amy Palavi, the waitress in Leverage's brewpub from The Broken Wing Job? This story follows her as she grows closer to the trio. It's an interesting perspective on them, and also she gets to have a really satisfying story of her own, interwoven with theirs. Her developing friendship with Parker (and to a different degree also Hardison and Eliot) is wonderful.

Content Notes:Amy and her family are subject to a racist online smear campaign. Leverage does something against it.

To rescue him, Parker and Hardison will have to team up with a hacker named Nomi Marks and venture into a world stranger than anything they've ever imagined.

Reccer's Notes:
It's a great case/heist fic in true Leverage style. I like the characterisation, how the two canons are merged, and it's entertaining and enticing to read. While the whole story could count as 'genius in action', there's one particular moment that I find stands out in that regard and filled me with the glee I get with good competence porn.

Reccer's Notes: Hommana, hommana, hommana

So I recently stumbled into both The Losers and Leverage, and while I adored Eliot, unless it's an OT3 with Parker and Hardison, there's really no one for him to jive with. That's where Jensen and Cougar come in.

In a way, the three of them are a lot alike. They are all bad-ass in their own way, and they care about things deeply. In this fic, Jake and Cougar pick Eliot up in a bar for a one night stand, but it turns into so very much more.

The characters are written perfectly, and the situations the guys get into are believable. This is a "stay up and re-read this until my alarm goes off" fic for me.

Summary: A one-night-stand becomes a whole lot more. If only life were that simple.

Reccer's Notes: This is the Leverage/Losers crossover that you didn't know you needed.

Sure, this fic starts out with Eliot in a bar when Jake and Cougar walk in, sit down, and end up picking Jake up for a threesome. And I will admit that I usually skim over sex scenes, though these are mostly well written (though rushed a bit).

But that's not really the purpose of the fic. Sure, it's a great start to it, but this fic delves into Eliot being the loner type, just like in canon and how, over the course of a few months, his life starts to have a little more Jake and Cougar in it until they're a mainstay. Their professional lives intersect, and it goes about as well as you think it does.

I was reading and enjoying this fic, because I (mostly) liked Leverage and (mostly) liked The Losers. But how the ending to the fic came about was basically how I though the ending of Leverage should have been. Because while I love the Parker/Hardison/Spencer OT3 that is a great deal of the Leverage fandom, there's something to be said about Eliot ending up with someone - or someones - that fit with his life. And Jake & Cougar fit ::chef's kiss:: perfectly.

edit: I forgot to put in here that the fic is marked "Author chose not to choose archive warnings" which is their wont, but did include a note at the bottom/end notes of the fic that it includes violence, language, attempted non-con, vague reference to previous non-con.  I nearly missed the discussion of the attempted non-con, and completely missed the reference to previous non-con, but please take care of your own self if these are triggers.

The characterisations are perfect with Elliot caught out about his past SGC connections, Parker's enthusiastic wonder, and Hardison almost stroking out with a geekgasm because spaceships! Jack supposes they still do.  Have you ever wondered about all those kids in comics who end up fighting criminals in spandex in the middle of the night?  Of all the fics that take a realistic look at that, this is one of my favorites.  In canon, Tim Drake (the third Robin)'s father figured out that he was Robin, freaked, and forbade Tim from being a vigilante.  He changed his mind, but canon didn't really tell us why.  Betty does, and it's a thoughtful and compelling portrait.

Able to Succeed.  "Assume success," says Bruce unencouragingly. "Describe how it's achieved."  Ever wonder how Batman trains Robin?  Wonder no more, because this awesome story packs a lot into just 1200 words.

Aspire to Touch the Sky.  Wonderful AU that explores Batman and Wonder Woman's relationship, after it got started in a rather ... unusual way.  It's an interesting spin on the characters, and a well-told story.

Reccer's Notes: I love [livejournal.com profile] davincis_girl's art. She's done some really amazing stuff and using a variety of different techniques including manip, graphite pencil, digital color and others. I love how she seems to get to the essence of the stories she illustrates and her work looks like she's loved doing it, as much as her audience will enjoy appreciating it.

Favorite Fanworks: Young Sam This piece was made for 2010 SPN Reverse Bang and really captures a supernatural mood.

Stem the tide, Point the blame Made for the X-Men Big Bang, this is multiple pieces, some atmospheric pieces. These were made with a graphics tablet.

And the Void Would Be Calling This piece was made for the Cap_ironman reverse bang 2012. Be warned this art contains a significant character's death. A moving piece.

But The Heart Made for the 2012 Avengers big bang. A great piece, filled with character and works well alongside the story it was made to accompany.

Reccer's Notes: Sometimes I am in the mood for good, old-fashioned, True Love stories. Those stories where the pairings have an instant connection, and abiding bond. If it is a crossover, all the better in my book. This is why I love [archiveofourown.org profile] race_the_ace. There might not be a huge delving into canon, or an exploration of character, but there is an enticing love story unfolding that totally sucks me in.

Favorite Fanworks:

Holding back the wind (Stiles Stilinski/Danny Mahealani). Stiles and Danny fall in love in fifth grade. This affects everything later on.

Life for Rent (G. Callen/OMC). One of the times an OMC works for me, and G Callen in love will never not be intriguing. I love it when guarded people fall in love.

The Difference Between Absolution and Redemption (Has Always Been Where You End Up) (John Sheppard/Eliot Spencer/Jonas Quinn). All 3 canons happen differently, so this is a bit of a mash-up, but I love it anyway. It has a lot of heart.

Reccer's Notes: Alec Hardison gets kidnapped by Director Fury to do a little hacking -- against an AI named Extremis -- and the Leverage team rescues him. Alec is such a fanboy of S.H.I.E.L.D and the story is simply hysterical. But we get to see Alec be good enough to take on Extremis, which is simply fantastic. Coder geek finery!

Reccer's Notes: A side story in the Stubborn, Silent and Grey series, but this one stands on its own. Hagar does a good job of tying together the two fandoms and using them to contrast one another. Fun, quick, with a sharp edge to it.

Summary: It seemed like a good idea at the time—a road trip to the Grand Canyon—although Eliot doesn't actually remember agreeing to the idea. He figures it'll be fine as long as he does most of the driving.

Reccer's Notes:

I just really enjoy how Hardison and Parker seduce Eliot into this and how the story continues after the first time sex actually happens, dealing with emotional fallout and establishing them as more. The whole story is full of awesome characterisations and interactions between the three; it's funny and fun and gentle angst with subsequent comfort.

Theme: Crossovers/Fusions
Summary: Two by two, what girls can do.

Reccer's Notes: The other day, during some Firefly marathon or another (maybe on The Science Channel), my mom and I were discussing whether the Serenity crew would have become more Robin Hood-esque and less out for themselves, if the series had been allowed to continue. Basically, would they have become Leverage In Space.

Of course, that conversation made me start thinking about Firefly/Leverage crossovers (my mind is a strange place), and the two characters who most needed to meet, I felt, were Parker and River. [archiveofourown.org profile] ijemanja clearly felt the same way, writing this epic, seamless crossover. Parker and River both have such an intense internal logic that it makes sense that they'd be friends. This story's concept--that Parker spent time at the Academy--also explains a lot about her personality and childhood development. Plus, there's some great imagery with a cat.
