Summary: Fa Zhou gets offered an advisory position in the Imperial City instead of riding to war and Fa Mulan finds her second attempt at Matchmaking goes better than the first.

Reccer's Notes: This is a fork-in-the-road AU that really captures the characters and what might have happened if things had gone differently. Everyone is so well portrayed, it's wonderful.

Summary: Mulan in space.

Reccer's Notes: This short space au is so good and so much fun. The characters remain perfectly in character and the fic captures the mood and feel of the movie and the relationships. Really worth a look.

Theme: female characters, college AU, female friendship (previously recced), humor

Summary: Mulan is a Resident Assistant on a dormitory floor at a college. Gosh, some of the students on her floor come from really screwed-up families.

Reccer's Notes: This author really knows how to make the best use of the princesses and the college AU. Everything fits, the details are perfectly updated to a modern/real life setting (Aurora has narcolepsy, Mulan is doing college on the GI Bill, etc.) It's funny and thought-provoking, and I love the way the girls all work together to help one another.

Theme: characters of color, hurt/comfort, novel-length
WARNINGS: Torture, violence, war

Summary: "Overall, a big long mess of romance and intrigue."

Post-canon sequel based on the premise that Shan-yu did not actually die at the end of the movie. The story was originally published as two separate stories on an old archive that's no longer active. It was combined into one two-part story when it was re-posted to FFN.

Reccer's Notes: This is a very old story in the archive but is not to be missed. Lian-hua is one of the best writers in this fandom. This epic fic picks up where the Disney movie ends, but Lian-hua injects her extensive knowledge of the history and culture of China into it and takes it out of the realm of Disney into a much more true-to-life verse. It's an incredibly well-written, richly woven tale of angst, action and adventure, political intrigue and courtly politics, romance, lots of hurt/comfort and the slow development of the relationship between Mulan and Shang through all of this. Canon and original characters are brilliantly drawn, historical characters are also included in the action and fleshed out. I recommend all of this author's remarkable Mulan stories, but this one in particular is stunning.

Summary: Mulan in space.

Reccer's Notes: This is just cool. I adore this characterisation for Mulan, and the strength of the worldbuilding in such a tiny fic, and the way her relationship with Shang works here. There's also an excellent Mushu cameo.

Summary: Jane Porter has big plans, but sometimes this office makes them seem a million miles away, or more.

Reccer's Notes: This is a charming AU. The office is populated with a cast of Disney characters who, along with their dynamics, have been really seamlessly transferred to that office environment. (I especially like the way Mulan is written in this; she's so much herself and so awesome.) It's cute and fun and often funny. Sweet.
