Summary: "There was a terrific row when Nana found out I'd only written one letter so she's sent me to write to you all properly, only I don't have anything left to say now and I do think it's silly to have to copy out the same letter twice." Posy Fossil's letters to her sisters from ballet school in Czechoslovakia, 1936-1938.

Reccer's Notes: Ballet Shoes is a delightful story about three sisters in 1930s Britain, their guardian, and their nanny. At the end of the story, one goes off to Hollywood under a studio contract, one goes to live by an aerodrome to learn to fly, and the youngest (Posy) goes to Czechoslovakia to be trained as a ballet dancer. Posy, the youngest, loves her sisters but is also self-centered and focused on her dancing. This is the first time she's ever been away from her sisters since she was a baby, and the letters trace that relationship even as they're hundreds and thousands of miles apart. But no matter how far apart they are, no matter how different their lives are, they still love one another. [personal profile] deepdarkwaters captures Posy's character, and her relationship with her sisters, perfectly.

Summary: "Did it ever occur to any of you that I might not want to have my only sexual experiences be with someone who isn't actually interested in me?" Will asked.

He was met by three identical looks of confusion. "I mean, it would still be sex," Dustin said finally.

Reccer's Notes: Set after a season four where, yes, a lot of people died. But the kids are seventeen now, and Mike and Will are both virgins, which Mike is very concerned about: Cue the 80s teen sex comedy. Unlike much of that genre, though, this isn't gross or embarrassing, and everybody's having a good time. I adored Will here, kind of baffled by what Mike's gotten them into, yet excited about it too, and it's wonderful to see him stand up for himself, confident enough to be honest about who he is and what he wants. Plus it includes the entire crew, even Argyle.

Reccer's Notes: An amazing post-canon fic where Beth, frustrated by the period-typical sexism she keeps facing, marries Benny for convenience and now they’re stuck in a fake relationship full of unresolved tension, mutual pining, and all their messy issues (addiction, gambling, competitiveness). Summary: You see, society and theatre (and aren’t they really the same thing? - someone, please, offer Mrs. Albert Knickerbacker her smelling salts) are built on the sand of lies: lies of omission, lies of commission, old-fashioned deceit, dishonesty, and compounded misunderstandings.

It takes only a rudimentary understanding and a halfway-capable grasp of human nature to begin to sift the truth from the lies.

Reccer's Notes: All About Eve is a classic 1950s drama about a young actress (Eve Harrington) who advances her career by playing a sweet innocent, attaching herself to an aging star (Margot Channing, played by Bette Davis), and stabbing her in the back. At the end of the movie, Eve marries a witty, snobbish, and super-queer-coded theater critic (Addison DeWitt). This is his perspective on their marriage and their daughter. The narrative voice is very strong, it feels like the movie.

The thrilling sequel to Coco that you've all been waiting for! Miguel visits ... wait for it... wait for it... A LIBRARY.

Reccer's Notes:
The story of Miguel Rivera attempting to get his ancestor the recognition he deserves, and establish some independent evidence of the things he's learned about Ernesto de la Cruz, told through newspaper articles and TV interviews interspersed with social media posts, all by people from outside the family who don't know what the audience knows about the origin of Miguel's quest.

It's a great story, hilarious and touching by turns, and the characters are beautifully well-observed. I particularly love Abuela Elena's insistence that her grandfather was a good-for-nothing, but nevertheless he's the Riveras' good-for-nothing and she better not catch anyone outside the family disrespecting him.

Summary: Excerpts from Encyclopaedia Galactica, tenth edition, worldbuilding

Reccer's Notes: So what kinds of evidence would there actually be for historians to put together a report on Vader's identity and the Empire and the old Jedi Order and the formation of the New Republic? Not much, given how enthusiastic Palpatine was about destroying the Jedi and the fact that the Jedi and the Rebellion were trying to stay covert. And, let's face it, the truth as shown in the movies is pretty improbable without the kind of evidence to back it up that simply wouldn't exist any more. These two ficlets are a great look at the kinds of theories that historians have put together many centuries later, long after the questions are safely academic.

...the Order of Skywalker Knights believe that their founder, Luke Skywalker, was the son of Anakin, and it was the relationship between the two that allowed the younger Skywalker to survive his encounter with Darth Vader during the First Battle of Endor. However, as many historians have pointed out, this only serves as evidence to support the theory that Vader was Luke’s father; it does nothing to prove that Anakin and Vader were one and the same. As the Jedi of the late Republic were traditionally celibate, most mainstream historians consider Luke Skywalker’s claims to be dubious at best...

Summary:

A time-traveling shower transports 18 year old Yuuri into the body of his future self—and into the arms of his idol, Victor Nikiforov. Now Yuuri must pretend to be his older self until he can return to his own era. Which would be a lot easier if Victor weren't so attentive. Or so affectionate.

But as time goes on, Yuuri finds himself torn between his old life, and a new one that would hand him everything he ever wanted...but at the cost of his real identity.

Reccer's Notes: This is comfortfic for me largely because how Victor (a year and a half after canon) handles Yuuri (visiting from five years before canon) and his anxiety. While people reading this in full knowledge of canon will therefore figure many things out before Yuuri learns them—or wince knowing Yuuri doesn't learn them in time—anyone going in knowing only this rec post will simply know exactly as much as Yuuri does. Which specifically does not include any sort of assurance that Yuuri's future, after he returns to the time he came from, will include this Victor's past; in particular, there is passing mention of the death of a loved one (who survived take two) and of a pet (who didn't, despite Yuuri's efforts).

He watches her that night, like he hasn’t done in months, a specter outside her bedroom window, a breeze in the dark night.

Her things are, as always, scattered around her bed where she dropped them upon falling asleep. He can’t help but take notice that the fan is in a place of pride, tacked up on the wall next to polaroid pictures of — he realizes with a start — the two of them. He remembers her taking the pictures, shoving that too-big retro camera in his face and squishing the two of them together tight enough that He Xuan’s cheek brushed against hers.

He shakes the memory off and watches her sleep, her chest slowly rising and falling with each inhale and exhale.

Reccer's Notes: Reincarnation modern-day future fic featuring a mortal trans girl Shi Qingxuan and an unspeakably ancient, he/they lesbian, shapeshifting ghost He Xuan. Very good character voice for He Xuan, and there were so many little characterization details that hit just right for me, not least the approach taken to the relational aspects of He Xuan's gender (the description of his outfits getting increasingly femme in an effort to one-up Shi Qingxuan made me laugh.)

And since it's fic from a bang, it has accompanying art, which is amazing, and really hits the "lesbian Edward Cullen" vibes of it all.

Reccer's Notes: In one of the very early episodes of Torchwood, Jack Harkness has a throwaway line about never being pregnant again, and of course it got latched onto. This takes that, and all the crazy things that happen regularly around/to Jack Harkness, and does a different and, I think, pretty unique take on what could happen. This story manages to also slot itself perfectly into canon and keep everyone true to character, while also presenting a pretty believable future. The time travel doesn't enter the story until about halfway through, but it's integral to the story.

Summary: A serial story of what-if: what if Cam had been a little more injured, and what if Jack's clone had been a little less willing to walk away.

Reccer's Notes: Colonel Jack O'Neill was cloned in an episode of SG-1; the clone looks like he's sixteen, but has all of Jack's memories.   At the end of the episode, he was given a cover identity and went back to high school, pretending he really was that age, and was never seen or mentioned on camera again.  Cameron Mitchell was a pilot who was shot down defending SG-1 over Antarctica, and almost died.  In canon he was perfectly healed, but there is a canon-AU in which he was confined to a wheelchair and permanently disabled.  This Cam is somewhere in between.  Broken Wings is a fascinating look at what might have been if the two had met, and become partners.  It's beautifully written, and with a deep understanding of what it means to live with a disability.  The story isn't about Cam's disability, but about their life together, with a realistic picture of how Cam's disability affects every aspect of their lives.  It's not written for effect or for disability porn; it is what it is.

Back in the heydey of SG-1 fandom, [personal profile] ivory_gates was [personal profile] synecdochic's frequent partner in crime, and the two shared a couple of AUs.  One of them is the Mezzanine-verse, in which they redid the Broken Wings premise (though not its plot) with a genderbent Cameron Mitchell.  It, too, is very good.

Summary: Lust Over Pendle is a comedy of manners set in the Golden Age detective thriller genre, and is presumed to take place after the end of the seventh Harry Potter book, and, therefore, after the fall of Voldemort. A paparazzo photographer takes a compromising photograph of two young men on an tropical beach and unwittingly brings about an alliance between the two most fearsome witches in the country. Family conflict, leaky roofs, unscrupulous journalists, unexpected engagements, random werewolves and probably the two daftest dogs in fanfiction.

Reccer's Notes: This series is a wonderful collection of novels and short stories that go AU before Half-Blood Prince. They are absolutely addictive, hitting every note from humor to pathos to angst and back again, while cheerfully and lovingly skewering British society of all levels and regions. AJ Hall has a deft hand at genre, weaving elements from mysteries, adventure novels, comedy of manners, farces, and sometimes tragedy into a fun romp with a heart. I opened up the page to find a summary for the series, and two hours later I resurface to actually post the rec. Summary: When Bajor hosts an interstellar music festival, to which a very unusual star singer is invited, Jake must face questions about friendship, manhood and culture, as well as freedoms of belief.

Reccer's Notes: This is my favorite of Macedon's stories, in large part because I love how he writes Vulcans. Macedon's greatest gift is the ability to take an idea, a theme, a moral (or a set of them, for his longer works) and make them come to life in the lives and thoughts of his characters. He explores issues realistically, without ever becoming preachy or moralistic or filled with platitudes, and he does it because everything (plot, theme, world-building, etc.) flows naturally from the lives of his characters. He makes every character he writes (original or not) be realistic, three-dimensional, and fascinating. Jeu-Parti is the story of Jake Sisko, the son of Commander Benjamin Sisko, and his relationship with a Vulcan named Salene. But it's also about choosing to be different, about choosing to pursue your dreams at the expense of normality, about dealing with society's disapproval, about friendship, about love, about family, about mental illness, about the difficulty of building a relationship--friendship or other--across cultural lines.  It does all that while being an engaging and entertaining series that I love to read and re-read.

In 1997, Nate knows he’s only been in love once, and it wasn’t with any of his girlfriends. He's 20 years old, but he’s old enough to know what that means, and he figures it’s time to start facing it.

In 2002, Brad would never in a million years have imagined he’d be standing in his CO’s office, past five on a Friday, hoping to stick around longer and shoot the shit instead of hoping to avoid conversation and get the fuck out of there asap.

In 2007, Nate’s got a 2 year plan, and a 5 year plan, and a 10 year plan. Plan A always optimistically assumes he and Brad finally get past this game of emotional chicken they’ve been playing for the last several years, but Nate is a pragmatist at heart, so there’s also a Plan B, with contingencies for what happens if they don’t.

i.e., 20 years worth of The Making of Brad and Nate.

Reccer's Notes: I only read this fic in March this year, but I am already looking forward to reading it again and again. The author really takes these characters and expertly fleshed out their pre-canon history, and then creates an epic long-distance romance post-canon that made me ache and smile and sigh. I think if you know nothing about the canon, you can easily read this as original fiction as this story really is about the characters becoming who they are and growing together.

This is now one of my all time favourite fics. If I could have this bound into a book for my shelf to keep forever I would.

One cold Christmas, Susan Pevensie meets Kay Harker, and things get very strange very quickly.

Reccer's Notes:
Some time after The Last Battle, still trying to cope with the deaths of her family and everything surrounding that, Susan Pevensie goes to spend Christmas with an elderly cousin and strikes up a friendship with one of the few other people in England who knows what it's like to be an adult who was once a child that went on adventures in strange lands with pagan gods and talking animals.

That's kind of a glib summation, but the story itself is anything but. It's beautiful and poetic and heartfelt, and I re-read it every year around this time and it never gets old.

(Odds are you've heard of Susan but not of Kay. He was the hero of a couple of classic children's fantasy novels written in the 1920s and '30s by the poet John Masefield, one of which was done for BBC TV in the 1980s by the same production team who went on to do the famous Narnia adaptation. I don't think you need to know any of the details going in, since this story's from Susan's point of view and covers the necessary bits of Kay's history as she learns them, but as a fan of long standing I may not be the best judge. Reccer's Notes: I recently re-read this series, of which the fic above is the central, longest work. It brought back to me how much I love this series, especially The Water Grinds the Stone, despite how angsty it is in parts. The series starts with The Taste of Apples, a genfic story where the original AR1 team are infected and subsumed by a planet-sized fungus-creature, then there's Sacrificial Drift, a mission-gone-wrong in which John and Rodney get together and have to grapple with the ramifications of the relationship when things go badly wrong. Then comes The Water Grinds the Stone, a double-novel-length saga about their continuing relationship, being intermittently separated by SGC shenanigans, the progression of their careers and Rodney's research, a worsening separation, a disastrous (all-too-believable) Declassification process, more disasters and eventual reconciliation. There's a lot of loneliness across much of the fic caused by Rodney's love of science/Atlantis keeping him there, with John increasingly bound to Earth by duty and the machinations of the SGC, but there's an eventual happy ending which is expanded on in the coda fic, The Weight of Water. It's all enormously well written and gripping, with truckloads of plot and action/adventure as well as relationship and character development. There's some of auburn's usual dystopian edge with the SGC bureaucracy very much ruthless and Machiavellian, and the political developments after Declassification are harrowing and scarily reminiscent of the past few years in America. A major work, and well worth a re-read if you haven't done so for a while.

That’s what Nursey thinks, the first time he sees William Poindexter.

Because the boy is beautiful even though he shouldn’t be. Even though he’s doubtless the kind of person who would punch you in the face if you said the words “you” and “beautiful” to him in the same sentence.

His skin is choked with freckles. It’s potentially more freckle than skin. Not just his face, where his nose and cheekbones are so hyper-pigmented they look tanned, but his collarbones and forearms and knuckles. The close-shaved dark ginger stubble of his hair should make his ears look too big or his mouth too wide but instead it accentuates the long curve of his throat, the cup of velvet skin between the tendons in the back of his neck.

“You’re the new defenseman?” Nursey asks. “William Poindexter?”

And the boy turns around and considers him with what might be contempt but what might just be the way his face looks and says, “Yeah?” like its a challenge.

And Nursey thinks:

Oh no.

Reccer's Notes: Where do I even begin with this one?

This fic is one of those that sneaks up on you, and before you know it, it's 3am and you haven't been to bed yet. The development of the enemies to friends to lovers is an exquisite slow burn for this fic, and there's really no time when you're not cheering for the boys to succeed.

The thing that made me think about this fic and the "going home" theme is that there's a scene in it - several scenes - that involve a Jackson Pollock painting. This whole fic is amazing, but how xiaq is able to draw the image of Dex and Nursey sitting in Nursey's parent's closet looking at a lost Pollock is just breathtaking. Sure, there's a lot of wonder to this fic. But I find myself craving that Pollock scene and end up re-reading this fic just because of it.

Reccer's Notes: I'm shocked this has never been recced, because it's one of the classic pre-AO3 HP fics. (It was written while the books were still coming out, so it wasn't AU when it was written.) Hogwarts has always been Harry's home, and it needs him, so he goes. This story is about trauma, and recovery, and healing, both for Harry and for Hogwarts itself.

Summary: Wednesday struggles to feel comfortable with her identity as an Addams and a mother, while living in a world that is far too normal.

Reccer's Notes: This is a classic because it takes the world of the movies and explores what that means for the characters. What does it mean to be an Addams? Specifically, what does it mean to Wednesday to be an Addams, especially while away at college and thus outside the family's world among "normal people"? What does being an adult woman mean to her, as an Addams? And then, having been out in the world, what does it mean to go home? It's full of wry humor and she feels so real, and I'd love to read more.  It's one of my go-to fics for this fandom.

It's a complex process, getting them released from their bondage so they can go home. Summary: Will has a concussion, and with that concussion comes nearly a decade worth of amnesia. His memory better come back quickly because not only is he married to Nursey now, he's also apparently keeping secrets from him.

Reccer's Notes: When I finished this fic for the first time and added it to my pinboard, I simply put, "This is perfect". In this fic, Dex wakes up in the hospital having lost the last 10 years of his memory, and is somewhat horrified to realize that he's not just living with Derek, but married to him. This fic deals with the week or so that Dex doesn't have his memory, and the emotional toll that it takes on both him, and his husband.

But beyond that there is a subplot of a secret that Dex has been keeping from Derek, and you can feel how this tears at Dex's soul based on the angst that he feels. But yes, it's a happy ending, and it's so, so worth it.

The reason I think this fits the "going home" theme is because Dex has built a home with Nursey - but he has to overcome his amnesia in order to not just realize it, but make it even better.

It manages to grow each character organically and to develop their relationship naturally and thus puts the eventual OT3 on very strong foundations. But the thing that sold me on the fic for all eternity? If you write the characters so well that I can hear how their actors would say the lines, you are doing something very right in my book!

Reccer's Notes: I loved Athena Crikey's works before I ever played Metal Gear Solid, and now that I have played them, I enjoy them even more. She has an amazing knack for taking premises that perfectly fit the distinctive world of the MGS series, but zooming in on the human and emotional element that the games can't really dig into. This fic in particular stuck with me all this time as a deeply unique fanfic - one which takes a premise that in other circumstances could have been fluffy or smutty, but playing it with all the horror and trauma that such a situation really would bring about in the game's canon.

Summary: Post-canon, Marc and Cliff meet again.

Reccer's Notes: This fandom rec has an unconventional start for me. I met David Blue (who played Cliff St. Paul) at a Stargate convention a few years back, and confessed to him that I had never watched Stargate Universe. I was, however, a fan of his from Ugly Betty, because I felt like part of his journey, as Cliff St. Paul mooning over and falling for Marc St. James, mirrored a part of my own life. David confessed that he absolutely loved playing Cliff, and that for the final season, his character was supposed to come back and reconcile with Marc, but because of his (now ex) Agent, he didn't get the chance.

I read this because I thought it would give those of us that liked Marc and Cliff some closure. But what it gave me was hope. Hope when their paths crossed again. Hope that love, once found and lost, could be found again. And hope for that happy ever after.

This fic gives us this. It's like a woven storyline that we deserved to see on the screen.

But maybe some memories can only be faced down in person. Frederick I. Iverson explores this in his article on the reunion of the Sunnydale Class of '99. The date is July 26, 2014: This is Talk of the Nation, for NPR.

Reccer's Notes: This is probably my favorite Buffy fic. One of her classmates ends up working for NPR, and writes an article for Talk of the Nation about the ten year class reunion. Three days later he drives away, determined not to return.

(Three months later the Citadel comes into sight again)

Reccer's Notes: "X Character is related to Y character!" is one of the standard ideas for a crossover story (though oddly it seems less popular than it was a decade ago), and this is one of the best of that style of story. Jack and Xander find out they're father and son, and build a relationship as family. It's not quite found family--because they are actually genetically related--but it hits some of the same emotional marks that found family stories often do.

It won't be for everyone as it's not McShep, and as everyone else from Stargate-verse apart from Rodney is long dead and gone, millennia ago. Reccer's Notes: I don't actually know if [archiveofourown.org profile] rageprufrock has ever worked in investment banking, but the amount and vividness of detail in this fic is breathtaking. The sections about Goldman Sachs really feel like tagging along to work with an analyst to watch him and his coworkers get abused by their soulless employer while the US economy collapses around them. If you're hesitating because of the original characters, let me assure you that you will get so attached to these nerds and it is so satisfying to see them form an unconventional little family (and make tons of money by being very smart). The epistolary and outsider POV tags are included because there's a industry magazine feature on Eduardo's company threaded throughout the story and it is honestly my favorite part -- it really reads like something out of the Wall Street Journal, and it ties the whole story together perfectly.

Reccer's Notes: This is a story about the uses of folklore, the functions stories have in society.  The most interesting types of minor characters stories in T:tSCC fandom focus on what happens to them on Judgment Day.  This particular story follows Martin Bedell, who was a student at a military academy when we saw him on the show.  (A military prep school for teens, not one of the service academies.)  Skynet sent a Terminator after him, as he was destined to become one of John Connor's right hand men in the Resistance.  So, Connor and Derek Reese infiltrated the school to protect Bedell.  In the process, Bedell learned about Skynet, and that (no matter what he might want to do with his life) he had to join the military so that he would have the training and expertise necessary when Judgment Day comes.  This is his story, preparing for Judgment Day and the Resistance.  And this is the story of the stories he tells.

With Leon and Ida comes Henry, Leon's servant and friend, and together, the four of them muse on curses, the aftermath of them, and just what it takes to get through it all.

Reccer's Notes: No need to know the precises foktales this fic draw from, as the archetypes are often enough: the prince turned into a frog, his princess, the younger son cursed into taking the shape of a swan with all his brothers... The story is not about the fairytales, but what the everafter can looks like when you spent years trapped as an animal, and deals in very clever ways with the afterneath of trauma. I really enjoyed the wordbuilding and the way the author wrote her characters.

Reccer's Notes: As with all the entries for this round, a true blast from the past! Over a decade after my first read-through, I have some very strong ethical concerns about the actual magical innovation that forms the backbone of the plot, but other than that it's still a thoroughly enjoyable read, with a slightly crack-y sense of humor that characterizes a lot of the great mid-series HP fics. (I'm not sure when exactly Contemporary Magical Innovations was first posted but the presumed canon backstory seems to diverge around Order of the Phoenix or thereabouts.) The sections of academic prose explaining the historical perspective on what is happening throughout the fic are a lot of fun, and let the story end on just the right note!
