Summary: The life of a Runner is hell, but even hell doesn't seem so bad when you have decent company.

Reccer's Notes: I love the premise of this fic, where Harry is exiled magically after being wrongly accused of killing Cedric Diggory at the end of the Triwizard Tournament, and ends up alone on an otherwise uninhabited planet in Pegasus (with no idea what the Stargate is) - a planet to which a wounded Ronon eventually comes. Harry was alone there for several years and although Ronon tries to make him leave for somewhere more populated, Harry won't go. So Ronon teaches Harry about Pegasus and the Stargates, and Harry uses magic to help them survive. It's a partial fix-it for Ronon, as although they both do better together, life on the run is still very hard. There are also tantalising hints about what happened to the wizarding world with Harry gone (nothing good). The bulk of the fic is gen as they don't act on the deepening bond between them until near the end. It's an interesting idea, and a great read.

Summary: Atlantis can be suffocating for a mage.

Reccer's Notes: This is an interesting story in which magic is known and utilised in society - Jennifer is a mage with impressive powers of healing. But unfortunately magic interferes with technology, including Ancient technology, which means mages can only operate in shielded rooms so they don't short out the Stargate, etc. The story shows the importance of Jennifer's role, but also the price she and the other mages pay in terms of isolation - but it ends hopefully. Great worldbuilding - very unusual, and well written.

Summaries: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Rodney swallowed and shook his head from side to side, as though he was sure he must have heard it wrong. "Broomsticks?"
"Oh, yes," said Harry. "I've always thought Atlantis needed a Quidditch league."

Reccer's Notes: A series of two fics from Carson's POV - possibly the first story to suggest the ATA gene conferred magical ability. The first one's gen and in the second there's a developing relationship with Hermione. This is a magical AU from SGA's perspective, and a fork-in-the-road AU for Hermione and Harry. Carson is a half-muggle wizard who was removed from Hogwarts by his mum at the end of the first war against Voldemort, and who lived as a muggle thereafter. By chance, his interest in magic is rekindled on Atlantis and in investigating his theory about the gene he comes to Hermione's attention. These are very entertaining fics with an interesting exploration of combining magic with Ancient technology, and they bring some key figures from HP into SGA-verse. There's romance in the second story but the focus of both fics is largely gen. In the second one, Harry of course brings quidditch to Atlantis, despite incursions by the Wraith, and John of course takes to it like a duck to water. Fun, clever, and hopeful, the series is a great read.

Reccer's Notes: This is an amusing magic and sports AU, a fusion with Harry Potter 'verse. It's set after Voldemort's defeat and busaikko manages some wonderful characterisation of them both, with Rodney trying to repair his shop's reputation after his grandfather disgraced the family by joining the dark side, and John having been somewhat unjustly punished in the fall-out after the war: "He never gave interviews, Jeannie wrote, and always shuffled sideways out of his playing cards." Lovely worldbuilding and romance, and an excellent read.

Reccer's Notes: This is such an interesting use of a magic AU. It takes the canonical elements (Peter in love with Harriet; Harriet deeply attracted but also ambivalent because of a wide range of factors including but not limited to her trauma over her previous relationship, the class differences, her vocation as a writer) and adds magic. Which doesn't fix anything, actually. It has some of the best explorations of Peter and Harriet in this phase of their relationship I've ever seen in fanfic.

In this story, Miranda became a witch. When she is shot in Charlestown, she doesn't die. She and James go on to rescue Thomas.
I love the idea of Miranda as a witch and the magical realism of the story. I love the spotlight it puts on Miranda, as she is one of my favourite characters in Black Sails. I also love how the story handles the reunion - the necessity of getting to know each other anew after a long period of forced separation.

Theme: Big Bangs

Summary: The gift of magic carries a death sentence on Earth, and one so accused can be executed on suspicion, for the simple reason that the destructive power of an angry wizard can lay waste to entire countries. When magic awakens in a person just as they leave their teens, whether it is the untameable power of a wizard or the lesser abilities of a mere magician, life becomes a constant quest to hide it at all costs.

Dr. Rodney McKay, PhD PhD, is a wizard. Incredibly, he has learned to control his power and is one of the few wizards in the world to make it past his twenties. In order to remain hidden, he has sworn never to use his magic except in the most desperate of circumstances, to save the life of himself or others. But what will happen in the Pegasus Galaxy, where desperate circumstances are commonplace and chaos threatens to overwhelm the expedition at every turn?

Reccer's Notes: Written for the 2009 SGA Big Bang, this story is full of drama and nail-biting moments, of the fear felt by Rodney of being burned alive simply for what he is. I loved the role Teyla played, putting plans into motion the moment she found out how Earth treated those with magic abilities. I liked seeing how she and Kavanaugh slowly won over both the expedition and the SGC to allow Rodney to return to Atlantis after he used his wizard power to save hundreds of lives. I love how protective Ronon was of Rodney, and how John overcame his own fears and prejudices after falling in love with Rodney.

There is also an incredible piece of art by Leyna accompanying this story.

When the MCRT unknowingly is cursed, the effects are very different for the different individuals. You might even say they get their ‘just desserts’. 😉 A bit of fluff, a bit of crack, and thoroughly fun.

Summary: Of all the things Chloe expects to find on Lucifer’s bookshelves, a book of fairy tales isn’t one. Only, it’s no ordinary book and curiosity has consequences. Follow Chloe on a journey through a magical storybook...

Reccer's Notes: Maybe a fairytale-fixit? As Chloe and Lucifer are trapped in and travel through a series of fairytales, they learn lessons that reinforce what they mean to each other, and how deeply each cares for the other. The quality of the stories is a little uneven (different authors) but, in general, we get to revel in slightly twisted fairytales while Chloe and Lucifer have to figure out a way to make the tale come out "right" so they can move to the next one. Some are light and fun, some verging on dark, but each ends with Chloe and Lucifer closer together and ever more sure of their connection.

Content Notes: Story #7 has strong elements of dub-con and non-con, in several protracted scenes.

Summary: Bucky and merSteve met as kids in Brooklyn. When Bucky goes off to war, Steve gets the help of Merskine to get some human legs and extra muscle to go save his POW boyfriend. Together they form the Howling Commandos and fight the good fight before going down in a plane together and getting frozen for decades. When they wake up, canon is more or less restored, minus the part where Bucky was never kidnapped a second time and Steve shapeshifts back and forth from scaley to fleshy. (All very minor details.)

Reccer's Notes: This is a fun AU where Steve's a merman and Bucky's his boyfriend, and they still beat up a bunch of Nazis. More like a series of connected stories than one huge story; each chapter takes place over a specific time period and it jumps around a lot. Author tagged this as "crack treated seriously," which honestly is the best way to do it. Later chapters feature baby mer!

Reccer's Notes: Marc-Andre works for a paranormal detective agency; Kris is a ghost. This works out remarkably well. Garrett Jacob Hobbs loved his daughter so much that he murdered eight girls. Hannibal cut out lungs heavy with rose blossoms and mounted the body on a stag. Will Graham put nine bullets in Hobbs' chest and a flower did not bloom.

Reccer's Notes: I have no interest in Hanahaki disease as a trope, but I absolutely loved what Virdant did with the premise. The writting is gorgeous and the way the magical realism fits with Hannibal's universe is brilliant: the use of the flowers for food of course (!!!!), but also the flowery metaphors and poetic imagery, the way the themes connect with Hannibal's obsession for Will...
Beautiful execution of a great idea!
