Summary: Nearly all of his life, Tony DiNozzo had known that he was only weakly latent and would probably never come online. As he's comfortable with himself and not terribly interested in change, it comes as a shock when an intimate moment during a sexcation with an old friend turns his life on its head. Out of the blue, his sleeping potential awakens ... and immediately draws the attention of the Alpha Prime Pair of North America. From there on out, it's one surprise after another for Tony, not all of them good, and he has to decide whether going through with his emergence is worth the promise of finding something beautiful on the horizon.

Reccer's Notes: When Tony DiNozzo starts to emerge as a guide, he's not just strong... he's so ridiculously powerful that his mental connections can stretch to another galaxy, and he's able to do things that astound his teacher, Blair Sandburg. This is a stellar (sorry!) story of personal growth and discovery, very Tony-centric as he tackles his new abilities with his typical competence. Sentinel and Stargate characters are in strong, but definitely secondary roles. But it's fun and totally absorbing, high up on my list of stories worth reading again.

Reccer's Notes: It’s a well-used idea -- each in love with the other, can’t believe the other loves them -- but it’s well-used because it can give us stories like this that are so good! Summary: Fifteen years ago, definitely cishet man Shen Yuan transmigrated into Shen Qingqiu, the female villain of reverse harem novel Proud Immortal Demon Way, and never looked back. Now happily lesbian-married, Shen Qingqiu gets caught in a PIDW plot that makes her actually confront what she wants from her gender and her relationship.

Reccer's Notes: This AU unpacks a lot of the latent themes around Shen Yuan|Shen Qingqiu's relationship to gender/femininity/masculinity and sexuality in a way that dovetails with canon while also feeling like its own fully-realized universe. I found the depiction of Shen Qingqiu's fear of her own desires and self-actualization really moving even as the fic maintains a Scum Villain-appropriate level of dedication to meta/genre-(un)savvy/internet humour and wacky sex comedy.

Summary:

He watches her that night, like he hasn’t done in months, a specter outside her bedroom window, a breeze in the dark night.

Her things are, as always, scattered around her bed where she dropped them upon falling asleep. He can’t help but take notice that the fan is in a place of pride, tacked up on the wall next to polaroid pictures of — he realizes with a start — the two of them. He remembers her taking the pictures, shoving that too-big retro camera in his face and squishing the two of them together tight enough that He Xuan’s cheek brushed against hers.

He shakes the memory off and watches her sleep, her chest slowly rising and falling with each inhale and exhale.

Reccer's Notes: Reincarnation modern-day future fic featuring a mortal trans girl Shi Qingxuan and an unspeakably ancient, he/they lesbian, shapeshifting ghost He Xuan. Very good character voice for He Xuan, and there were so many little characterization details that hit just right for me, not least the approach taken to the relational aspects of He Xuan's gender (the description of his outfits getting increasingly femme in an effort to one-up Shi Qingxuan made me laugh.)

And since it's fic from a bang, it has accompanying art, which is amazing, and really hits the "lesbian Edward Cullen" vibes of it all.

Summary: Somehow, Izzy Hands and Stede Bonnet have found an equilibrium. It's a precarious one, one they both assume has everything to do with Edward's last order as Izzy's Captain: that Izzy stay as Stede's first mate. Tied together by Ed's desire to keep them both close, they try to make it work — and it does, as long as they both keep ignoring the burgeoning respect that might turn into something more.

However, when Stede realizes his feelings, he panics, and a reckless decision changes everything...

Reccer's Notes: Izzy left the Revenge, but Stede brings him back months later from his self-imposed exile.  This fic does a great job building up the Stede/Izzy relationship, and finds a way to make Ed/Izzy work as well.  Its interesting in that even when they decide to give a triad relationship a try it doesn't automatically solve all their problems, and there is a lot of comprises they have to make a long the way to try and make it work.  One note, this was written just before season 2, so Izzy's characterization is much more based off what we knew of him from season 1.

Drawn to the isolated lighthouse and its curious crew of keepers, Nile discovers the joys of the lonely island, the secrets of its inhabitants, and a curse that may doom them all.

Reccer's Notes: Deeply engaging, almost lyrical AU, with a blending of canon events and supernatural elements that feels 'true', as if could only happen this way. The setting and interactions of the characters unfolds almost sensually, with beautiful strokes of the artist's brush writer's pen. The ending is bittersweet, but with a touch of hope. We don't need more -- the characters will go on -- but we can certainly hope for a sequel someday.

Theme: Big Bangs, Length: 20.000 - 40.000 words, theme: backstory, theme: canon alternate realities, theme: mutual pining,

Summary:
“Nursey!” The other kid that had arrived with Eric, with sick flow and a mustache, begins talking rather loudly to Annoyingly Attractive. “Representing Andover on the Taddy Tour! What up bro?”
The cookie turns to cardboard in Billy’s mouth. He can see it as if it was yesterday, the resigned look on Rochelle’s face as she broke up with him, the guy that walked into her room before Billy closed his computer, all sculpted brows and proud nose and striking green eyes that Billy had hated the minute he saw them.
Of course.
Of fucking course.

Billy Poindexter might be great at hockey, and working hard, and annoying his sisters, but he definitely needs some help when it comes to navigating his emotions. He's not sure what's worse, still missing the girl that broke up with him over a year ago, or being on the same defensive line as the rich pretty boy asshole she was "friends" with at their preppy, private high school. As Billy becomes Dex, he not only becomes part of the team at Samwell, but learns that maybe he doesn't hate Derek Nurse so much after all.

Reccer's Notes: First of all, if it weren't for this specific theme for fancake, I probably would not have read this. I didn't go into Check, Please! knowing about big bangs, but when I saw this month's prompt, I looked into it - and found quite a few older fics (this is WAY early in the life of the fandom) that I'd never gotten a chance to read.

The backstory here for Dex is somewhat similar to other fics; growing up in rural Maine, working on a lobster boat and the like. But there's something to how the author writes these characters that bring them to life so vividly that you end up not putting the fic down. This Dex - Billy at first, until Chowder gives him his moniker - loves deep, both his love interest (an OFC at first, Nursey after) as well as his family.

This is one of those comfort fics that I know I'll return to again and again. Because it just works

Summary: Nicky is a burned out doctor who needs a vacation. Lucky for him, his friend Nile asks him to pet/housesit while she is on her honeymoon. Surely it can’t be that hard to look after a dog and a cat? But when things go hilariously wrong, Nicky calls the number left by Nile for any emergencies and Dr. Yusuf al-Kaysani picks up the phone. But maybe this veterinarian can help more than just the pets? A modern romance with cuddly animals and love at first sight!

Reccer's Notes: When Nicky is haunted by what he's experienced, he is forced to take leave and recuperate. From there, the story becomes a sweet, fun, mortal AU meet-cute. When Nicky attends Nile's wedding to Booker, he meets best-man Joe, to their instant mutual attraction. Then it turns out that Joe is the vet for Nile and Booker's animals while Nicky is house/pet-sitting during the honeymoon. Nicky and Joe continue spending time with other as their friendship -- and attraction -- deepens and grows, facilitated by cute animals and snarky Andy and Quynh. Plenty of fluff and good food and gorgeous art from Gness add up to a delightful story.

Summary: Nile's undercover doing corporate espionage to stop climate change, and she's got to pack up her boss bitch suits and spike heels for the upcoming executive retreat — but she's expected to bring a partner. Booker, who's become her best friend since returning from exile, agrees to come with her. She's glad at least one person who appreciates her leadership will be there.

Reccer's Notes: Wonderful story. I love Nile all competent and in charge and doing what she has to do with long-term goals in mind, and Booker getting his shit together to make himself better able to support his team -- and especially Nile. I adore them working together to make sure each is taking care of the other's wants/needs sexually, while making sure their own wants/needs are met -- so HOT! But more than the delicious sexytimes, this is a well-crafted story that holds together, well worth reading.

Content Notes: Per the author: The corporation Nile is espionage-ing makes their money through racist and colonialist resource extraction; the fic doesn't go into detail about that but there are recurring references to structural racism including antiblack employment practices. There's one brief depiction of implied antiblackness in a misogynist microaggression. A few very brief depictions of sexual harassment. Also, a "lot of very explicit porn" including kinks, some bdsm, mild painplay.

Reccer's Notes: Written for a past due South C6D Big Bang. Okay, so not everyone likes zombie AUs, but I definitely do - I know this story as I did the complementary art for it, and it's a ripping good yarn. Great characterizations, lots of plot and action, a nice slow-burn romance between Fraser and Ray despite the dire straits they're all in and a wonderful OFC in Lola, a feisty trans woman they rescue who fights alongside them. Ray Vecchio starts off in Vegas and has to try to get back to Chicago despite hordes of zombies, and Frannie's pregnant. It's heart in your mouth action, with daring escapes and Dief being a hero (as ever), and a satisfying conclusion even if the apocalypse continues. An excellent read.

Some case!fic, some pre-slash (Vin/Ezra), some actual slash (Tony/Gibbs), some whump and a Gibbs/Larabee staring contest.

Reccer's Notes: A well-written, solid case fic, with two competent teams working well together, both within and across the teams. Add a touch of mutual pining on two fronts that does not interfere with the characters' professionalism but reaches a happy conclusion for both, and the author has given us a thoroughly satisfying story.

Summary: After the events leading up to Director Shepard's death, Tony DiNozzo is unceremoniously and quickly given orders to report to the USS Ronald Reagan to be their Agent Afloat the very next day. Exile. On very short notice, he gets on a military transport to head out to the west coast where the only other passenger is a USAF officer with dark, non-regulation hair who looks more surfer dude than military officer, but then things go absolutely nuts when aliens attempt to take over the plane and things go downhill from there.

Reccer's Notes: On his way to exile on the USS Ronald Regan, Tony DiNozzo just happens to be sharing John Sheppard's transport. When the pilot and crew start firing at them, of course Tony helps John fend them off -- whereupon he discovers that aliens exist, it's possible to walk away from a crash landing, life is way crazier than he ever dreamed it could be -- and perhaps a major change of venue might best the best thing for his career... and his love life. John and Tony work well together in this entertaining story as the author melds the fandoms together seamlessly.

Summary: There are bodies appearing all over the South Side of Chicago, and for once it doesn’t appear to be the work of Capone and his boys. Detective Sébastien “Booker” Le Livre seems to be the only one in the precinct that thinks this is a problem. He drowns his frustration at the nearest speakeasy to his shitty apartment, and listens to the incredible talent of Nile “Nightingale” Freeman and Joe al-Kaysani, the best jazz duo in the city. When the Nightingale is threatened, the crew of The Old Guard close ranks to keep her wings from being clipped and silencing her forever. Will the drunken detective be able to push back against the corruption in his precinct, or will he have to find this monster on his own?

Reccer's Notes: Absolutely wonderful period piece with TOG cast of characters set during the roaring 20's Prohibition. Andy owns the speakeasy, Nile is their "Nightingale" singer, and Booker is a detective trying to solve a series of murders -- and protect the woman he doesn't think he deserves. Well-written and flowing with spot-on voices; a beautiful, inspirational story, highly recommended.

The story opens with a shocking discovery that may help Rodney come to terms with some truths about himself and his relationship with John, and will have consequences beyond what anyone might predict.

Reccer's Notes: This story is epic in every sense of the word -- beautiful and difficult and painful and beautiful again. John disappears, Atlantis struggles, they find a baby with John's DNA who only responds to Rodney, Rodney is a most reluctant surrogate father but adjusts, they find John but he's mostly broken and takes a long time to recover (mentally and psychically more than physically)... and through it all, Rodney has Teyla and Ronon and all of Atlantis and her people quietly supporting him and the baby and John. Summary: He’s two weeks into his search when he sees the advertisement, small and unassuming, tucked away in the back of the local newspaper. “Andromache Restoration seeks furniture restoration specialist,” it says, and provides a mailing address to which applicants can send a portfolio. Nicky pauses, coffee cup halfway to his mouth, more than a little stunned by the opportunity. He knows of Andromache Restoration—knows the artists there from the work they’ve done across London, the paintings cleaned and repaired, the ceramics restored from broken pieces, the metalwork reforged.

Reccer's Notes: This story sings to my heart, jam-packed with a quiet loveliness. In this 'ordinary mortal' AU, everyone's creative art fits their personalities so well, and the details scattered throughout are stars that brighten the landscape. Nicky and Joe gradually growing closer, and their attraction to each other, is the icing on a very delicious cake. It really can't be adequately described; just read it!

This is the first of a series of (so far) three stories. The second, This Lonely Body Amazed is equally lovely, as Nicky becomes more integrated with the team while deepening his relationship Joe. The third, The Other Deepest Thing continues the theme (turns out Nicky is a bit slow about his and Joe's relationship <g>) and introduces a possible mystery. The whole series is just sweet and feel-good, and I certainly hope Sheafrotherdon continues it eventually -- not only for all the feels, but to learn more about what competitor Merrick is up to. Rating: Explicit
Length: Colorado Hold 'Em: 11,215, Cheyenne Noir: 60,159
Content Notes: In the first, just canon-level violence. The author chose not to warn in Cheyenne Noir, where John's still a detective and there's a serial killer who kills and mutilates people. The author also says their take on the Vegas AU is that it's a somewhat more sexist 'verse than canon.
Creator Links: shippenstand on AO3
Theme: Big Bangs, AU - noir, AU - law enforcement, Fix-it, Action/adventure, Friends to lovers, First time

Summaries:
If asked, Evan Lorne would say he liked gate travel and fighting aliens, and misses everything about the SGC except maybe the food. And the bureaucracy. He definitely doesn't miss the bureaucracy, even if it's probably the reason he walked out with his discharge papers instead of a court-martial. Of course, he can't say any of that, even though his hot new training officer at the Las Vegas PD, Laura Cadman, would sure like to know where he got his combat experience. But when something he's pretty sure belongs back in the Pegasus galaxy appears on a casino video monitor, he realizes he's got a couple of things he needs to tell her, and aliens are just the start.

Coming back to the LVPD, after aliens and space ships and surprisingly not dying, Detective John Sheppard expected life to be comfortably boring. Then a corpse shows up, killed simultaneously in too many ways all at once--trauma to the head, poison, gunshot, knife wound, strangulation and organ disruption--the hallmark of the Six Ways from Sunday killer. Dr. Rodney McKay offers John the resources of the SGC to help him catch an impossible murderer, and John only lets the SGC in because if the killer follows the patterns in LA and San Francisco, the lead detective on the case is next on the list.

Reccer's Notes: These were both written for the SGA Reversebang in successive years (the Reversebang was fic of at least 10,000 words inspired by artworks). They're set in SGA's Vegas 'verse so are Earth-based and the SGC exists. The first one focuses on Lorne and Cadman a little before "Vegas", and the second on John and Rodney (and many others) after the events of "Vegas". There's also a short backstory fic following Cheyenne Noir. They're really well written, plotty, twisty, with solid characterization and nicely unfolding relationships. Both are great reads, and together they're an excellent set. Highly recommended.

Summary: The tapestry of the Pegasus Galaxy. While I know Xela's mental images when she wrote the scene were necessarily and logically a lot different from mine, I have tried to render the tattoos described in her story as faithfully as possible, and I do hope I'm not too far off the mark. I then took the liberty to imagine the ones which had been mentioned but not described. The darts and the culling beams were directly inspired from the ones you can see on the murals in Teyla's home planet in "Rising".

Reccer's Notes: this is a classic, as I guess many recs in the Big Bang category will be, and it was reccd a couple of years ago in the doppelganger category. The gene therapy goes wrong and changes Rodney in unexpected ways - the story is about how he and John (and everyone else) cope with that and resolve it. It's friends-to-lovers, but almost enemies-to-lovers initially as the journey's not easy, and like all transformation fics where there's the possibility of reversing the effects, it's also eventually about coping with the loss of the changes. A wonderful read.

Summary: The gift of magic carries a death sentence on Earth, and one so accused can be executed on suspicion, for the simple reason that the destructive power of an angry wizard can lay waste to entire countries. When magic awakens in a person just as they leave their teens, whether it is the untameable power of a wizard or the lesser abilities of a mere magician, life becomes a constant quest to hide it at all costs.

Dr. Rodney McKay, PhD PhD, is a wizard. Incredibly, he has learned to control his power and is one of the few wizards in the world to make it past his twenties. In order to remain hidden, he has sworn never to use his magic except in the most desperate of circumstances, to save the life of himself or others. But what will happen in the Pegasus Galaxy, where desperate circumstances are commonplace and chaos threatens to overwhelm the expedition at every turn?

Reccer's Notes: Written for the 2009 SGA Big Bang, this story is full of drama and nail-biting moments, of the fear felt by Rodney of being burned alive simply for what he is. I loved the role Teyla played, putting plans into motion the moment she found out how Earth treated those with magic abilities. I liked seeing how she and Kavanaugh slowly won over both the expedition and the SGC to allow Rodney to return to Atlantis after he used his wizard power to save hundreds of lives. I love how protective Ronon was of Rodney, and how John overcame his own fears and prejudices after falling in love with Rodney.

There is also an incredible piece of art by Leyna accompanying this story.

Summary: "But in this career path, relationships and self-identity are not prioritized. While spies are trained to be able to ingratiate themselves with others, fooling strangers is a long way from the honesty and communication that people in relationships tend to expect. Combined with an emotionally stunted bedrock, navigating these waters can be ill-advised at best and downright dangerous at worst, often with little hope of success." And yet, despite everything, Michael Westen finds himself trying anyway.

Reccer's Notes: Written for the now defunct [community profile] queer_bigbang, this fic does a good job showcasing Michael's various relationships with people in Burn Notice, even if canon retconned some of these relationships in later years (especially with Samantha and her son). These relationships are more romantic and sexual than they are in canon, but they all lead to a personal revelation specifically in this fic. And in between the romantic and sexual stuff there are scenes where Michael, whether with or without his first Miami-based team of Sam, Fiona, and himself, is seen doing the spy craft he was known for during Burn Notice's run.

Content notes: The author has a content note for implied underage sexual content (between two minors) that occurs in the first chapter of this fic. Other content notes are in the content notes listed on Dreamwidth and the fic's tags.

Summary: "So let me get this straight," said Bones, "you're going on a date with a Vulcan you've never met, but he's also your best friend?"

"It's not a date!" Jim insisted.

(Or: the You've Got Mail/Star Trek 2009 mashup no one asked for but we all needed.)

Reccer's Notes: We did need this! Jim and Spock's online relationship is so sweet and nurturing and their offline relationship is so combative and the emotional tension is so, so good. I particularly like the way their online relationship changed the decisions we see them make in the movie, and how neatly the author rewrote the events of the movie to fit this version of Jim and Spock. Written for the T'hy'la Bang.

Summary: Jack Carter and his daughter Zoe experience a pretty disastrous start to their road trip vacation when they get completely lost out in the middle of nowhere and then crash the car. They seek refuge in the nearby town of Eureka and discover a whole new world of 'peculiars' - people with extraordinary gifts, hiding from the rest of the world and, more importantly, from the monsters that hunt them. Of course, it's just Jack's luck that the monsters chose that moment to find them and he gets dragged into the town's fight for their lives, discovering his own gift along the way as well as having to cope with his intense reaction's to Eureka's stupidly handsome mayor.

Reccer's Notes: Created for [community profile] smallfandombang, this story is a fusion with the book Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Nathan is the mayor of the hidden town but he is injured so he cannot move the town to keep it safe from the monsters that are after the peculiar people that make up the town's residents. I love how the author has given peculiar powers to each of the well known Eureka characters. Jack and Zoe stumble into the town seemingly by accident and I love that at first they are seen as outsiders until a monster arrives. I enjoyed the slowly building respect and more between Jack and Nathan as they battle monsters and help Nathan regain his power to save the town. I had the pleasure of creating art for this wonderful story and enjoyed it so much I bought and read the original novel.

The words 'Big Bangs, at Fancake' sit, stacked on top of each other, in the center of a dark backdrop. Exploding outward from the center are millions of pink and blue and purple particles flying in all directions, like glitter, or stars.
