Summary: If Blair's washing out of the guide program, who's taking care of Jim?

Reccer's Notes: Of all the Sentinel and Guide series I've read, this is my very favorite for the depth of the relationship that slowly builds between Blair and Jim, and for the detailed and intricate world-building. This is closer to your canon Sentinel (no mental shields or bonding) but extrapolates from there in the most fantastic ways, especially as pertains to the science behind Sentinel biology, requiring Guides to get doctorates in the field and still having to pass special criteria. Sentinels are victims of their own hyperreactive senses, and Dasha takes this to the ultimate conclusion, medically-speaking. The resulting stories have tons of H/C but also lessons in communication and how to ask for help, something Jim has never been good at doing; and along the way, Blair learns he has his own skills and versatile methods that might not be sanctioned by the Institute, but work pretty damned well: he is a Guide at heart.

Summary: If Blair's washing out of the guide program, who's taking care of Jim?

Reccer's Notes: This series is stupendous. It's a Sentinel AU where sentinels and guides are known and (relatively) common, with specific training and accreditation for the guides. This 2007 post, where Izhilsha rhapsodizes about the series explains it much better than I can. The worldbuilding is complex and detailed where it diverges from canon, and the sentinels and guides are as varied as RL people; there's no "set" way for either of them to act and/or react; we see difficult adjustments as well as easy adjustments. The series is sweeping and expansive and totally engrossing.

The main crossover is Sentinel & Monk, but in various stories, Dasha brings in characters from Highlander, Numb3rs, due South, Bones, Psych, and Quantum Leap, but knowledge of those fandoms is not necessary. Dasha deals with the characters, not the fandom, and they can be regarded as OCs if the reader doesn't know them, learning about these guest characters as Jim and Blair do.

Stories 1-9 are the "main storyline", Jim and Blair settling into their new status as sentinel and guide and dealing with all the other sentinels and guides that they meet. (Ignore the 1/? on story #8; Dasha may have intended more, but the ending is not a cliffhanger; it feels more like a teaser/lead-in to story #9.) Stories 10-15 are "side roads" that follow separate sentinel-and-guide pairs; Jim and Blair may not be around, but they're all in the same universe.

I would expect that everyone and their sisters and brothers have already read this but if not, and if you're at all interested in The Sentinel fandom, you're in for a treat.

Summary: Vidding: A History emphasizes vidding as a critical, feminist form of fan practice. Working outward from interviews, VHS liner notes, convention programs, and mailing list archives, Coppa offers a rich history of vidding communities as they evolved from the 1970s through to the present. Built with the classroom in mind, the open-access electronic version of this book includes over one-hundred vids and an appendix that includes additional close readings of vids.

Reccer's Notes: I've recced several vids that were important to the history of vidding, in one way or another, and shared bits of that history as I did so. If you liked that, you should read this book. It's not that long, and it's got a lot of vids from a wide variety of eras and shows embedded in it. Coppa is an acafan, a fan who is also an academic, and who was part of the vidding community for a long time before writing the first academic history of it. But even if you don't want to read the book, there are just under 200 vids used as examples which are hosted on the book's resource page on the website, from a variety of eras and fandoms.

Summary: The more things change...

Reccer's Notes: This is a vid about vidding. It's about the history of vidding, and it's about what vidders do: construct realities in defiance of the powers that be in Hollywood who want complete control over how people watch their shows and interact with them (and certainly don't want people copying bits to use as part of their own art).

To really get this vid, you have to understand the history of vidding. The first vids were literally slide shows: slides, in projectors, advanced in time with the music. I recced one such vid (Both Sides Now by Kandy Fong) earlier this month, and if you're sharp-eyed you'll see a clip of that vid in this vid. Then came VCRs, and in order to vid you needed a dual-editing machine, i.e. one with two tape decks that you could record from one VHS tape onto another. Vidders would work together to plan out how long each clip needed to be and exactly what time code it would stop and start, then would record the whole thing onto the master tape clip by clip using stopwatches. (And stopping and starting didn't happen instantaneously; the tape would rock forward a few frames past where you stopped it, so you had to know your machine very well to compensate for that. Oh, and magnetic tape degrades as it gets re-recorded over; if you messed up one clip and didn't start over from scratch, it would be noticeable.) One of the main vidding collectives of this era, the California Crew, once filmed themselves making a fanvid and then made that footage into a vid to "Pressure by Billy Joel." (ETA: I have been informed that Pressure is available online!) "Pressure" is included in this vid, when they transition from film to TV; when you see the hands and the stopwatch, that's it. After that came computer editing, which is still used today (though of course programs and specific hardware change constantly). The vid used to start this section is Dante's Prayer, which I've already recced this month. And then, at the end, the llamas: llamas were the mascots of Vividcon (2002-2018), the premiere vidding-focused convention in the US, which made llamas the symbol of vidding and vidders for many US vid creators.

Summary: Bohemian Rhapsody, The Story

Reccer's Notes: Six years ago, twenty-five YouTube vidders came together with one song, maybe the most legendary song in the last fifty years, and brought it to life. It's a spectacular, modern take on the song, illustrating the lyrics with contemporary media, and bringing a fresh, if brutal, look at the story. Despite there being twenty-five editors, the cuts are clean, coherent, and have excellent flow. We've all heard this song, most of us can sing it by heart, but finally, here is the whole story laid out, as painful and frightening and magnificent as Freddie intended.

Summary: Who's up for a metaphor?

Reccer's Notes: Although the most skin that gets shown in this vid is tiny bit of male pectorals being exposed briefly, this is not a vid that is safe to watch at work. It's about metaphors. Mostly phallic metaphors, though there are a few yonic metaphors as well. Some of the metaphors were intended by the creators of the original shows; some weren't, but were taken that way by fans intent on reading slashy subtext into things. Some of the metaphors only become metaphors when you put them in a lineup of all the other metaphors. And some of the clips aren't metaphors at all, but just weird visual stuff shows did. The overall effect is very funny.

Note: this vid was premiered at Vividcon. VividCon was a convention for anyone who enjoyed fannish vids - watching them, talking about them, or making them. It ran from 2002-2018 and the con mascot/logo was a llama, which is why there are llamas in this vid--it's an in-joke. This vid was the opener for the vid show at the con that year.

Reccer's Notes: Some dialogue bits over the music, not too disturbing. (No subtitles, but the plot is easily understandable from the selected scenes.)

The creator has taken scenes from various movies and dramas from each actor and put them together in a way that makes it look like they're all acting in this one together. It's blended together very, very well! I only knew a couple of the sources, and found myself intrigued enough to hunt down (most of) the rest. And it is so well done. The song choice is perfect, and they did an excellent job of finding clips to show the visual tropes of manpain and really reinforce how common they are. Summary: mulan and ariel are about realizing who you and starting your transition. kida and hiccup are about being out for a long time and like mostly satisfied with your body and presentation and finding love for trans people (familial for hiccup and valka, romantic for kida and milo) going back to the start again with riley again who’s just not at the point to understand why everything feels so wrong. [more vidder notes at link]

Reccer's Notes: This is such an interesting, thoughtful, and moving vid about characters that the vidder is reading as trans. There is some struggle in their journeys but the vid focuses on love, joy, and supportive relationships. I love the effect of putting some of the lyrics visually into the vid, and the editing is gorgeous.

Content notes: some flashing

Reccer's Notes: This is kind of a companion piece to Starships, a beautiful, awed, and sometimes sobering look at the American quest to reach the moon.

Theme:
Sentinel AU, novel-length, crossover, casefic, fandom classic, old fandoms, plotty fic, worldbuilding

Summary:
If Blair's washing out of the guide program, who's taking care of Jim?

Reccer's Notes:
If you're wondering "how come she's reccing a Sentinel fic for a Sentinel AU category?" it's because this is one of the biggest and best known mega-crossovers in which one (or more) character from a particuar show is a Sentinel who just happens to cross paths with Jim and Blair. It's popular for a reason; the stories in this series are generally well-written, great worldbuilding on what "a world where Sentinels and Guides are known." And I think it is a more real look at what the world might be like than a lot of Sentinel AUs are. It's neither a dystopia nor a paradise, with lots of thought put into things like "what might the Occupational Safety and Health Administration regs be like for sentinels? What are the legal limits on the police use of Sentinel surveillance?" And so on and so forth. It's also a thoughtful look at the aftermath of abuse and recovery from abuse. In addition, there are a series of great cases that build into one overarching case that ties everything together. And there were so many different fandoms, there was something for everyone. I've only listed the major crossovers.

Fanwork Links:
Ahahahaha. Unfortunately, this series got posted in dribs and drabs on a variety of archives. If you, like me, prefer reading on AO3 where you can download fics to archive them easily, the first nine main-line (focusing on Jim and Blair) stories are here at AO3
The first nine stories plus (I THINK) all of the ones focusing on the crossover characters are here
The tenth mainline story, which really is a stand-alone which crosses over with Murder, She Wrote, is here.
I think that's everything?
