Summary: Their guardians dead at the hands of the Condesce, growing up in the shadow of her slow takeover of the Skaian Federation, Dirk Strider and Jake English have spent their whole lives alone up until shortly before their twelfth birthdays.

Or: Dirk fixes a transmitter, makes a friend, builds a robot, and tries to communicate affection over distance to the barest possible minimum.

Reccer's Notes: The sense of longing in this fic is just so perfectly rich - this all-encompassing sense of isolation and loneliness and ever-so-tentative reaching beyond one's world towards another! The vaguely Star Trek-ish setting works perfectly for these two, building on their canonical geographical separation with some unique and very relevant new elements!

Theme: Don't need to know canon, Action/adventure, au: science fiction, space au, character development, genfic

Summary: Steven Grant has a terminal illness and a job mapping routes for the spaceships which make interstellar journeys between inhabited colony worlds, so when he gets the opportunity to have his mind merged with someone else's to become a composite person – two people inhabiting one body, capable of piloting ships through z-space – he takes it. But Steven’s composite partner has secrets, and Steven’s about to find out that you can live in someone else’s head and still not know them at all.

Reccer's Notes: You really don't need to know the show at all for this, as Rheanna's taken the multiple personality aspect of Moon Knight (which is in the superhero/fantasy/Egyptian mythology genres) and made it a futuristic science fiction process, as outlined in the summary. The result is a bloody good read, a combination of sci-fi action/adventure and the interesting psychological process of becoming a "composite" person - two minds in one body. As it's new for Steven as well, it's all explained in the fic, and interesting twists arise because Marc, the other part of the composite, has secrets that he and the company that owns the spaceships are concealing. A gripping, complex story, very well done.

Theme: going home

Summary: The boy came to UCR_1669321_QH with the night shuttle. This was significant only because the ID he showed to Auntie Huaifeng on paperwork duty is clearly fake, and he didn’t leave with the next shuttle outbound—he wandered further into the belly of the station instead, asking about work.
Auntie Huaifeng reports this all to Mingjue through the comm right from her rickety booth overlooking the station shuttleport in gleeful, cracking bursts.

Reccer's Notes: This fic is about arriving at the Qinghe space station and slowly learning it it to be your home - maybe only after you left and have to decide to go home. One of the strong suits of this fic is how the space station comes alive and the reader gets to experience its’ homeness, too, while we follow how it and the Nies become home for Wang Yao.
(I would like to give an additional warning for a scene involving heavy drinking and references to wartime violence done to the main character, these are not explicit, we just see them affecting him still.)

Summary:

“And here you are,” Yibo agrees. “What’s next?”

Xiao Zhan shrugs. “Another flight, further out. A ship if I can sign on to one.” He grins at the thought, then peeks at Yibo. “I don’t suppose you know a crew who’s looking for a mechanic? I’m good with my hands,” he says, wiggling his fingers.

Yibo raises his eyebrows and Xiao Zhan feels his ears turn hot. “Why not a ship of your own?” Yibo asks.

Xiao Zhan snorts. “I didn’t cash in that much.”

“You might be surprised,” Yibo says, and Xiao Zhan deflates a little.

“And you were doing so good at not being a salesman,” he says resignedly, and Yibo grins.

Xiao Zhan leaves the quiet, stable life of a shipyard mechanic for adventure in the stars; adventure finds him after the third drink.

Reccer's Notes: I love the worldbuilding in this. I love the conceit of Yibo as both android and ship, and I love his reaction to Xiao Zhan repairing him while he's online; I've never seen something like that, and it's both logical and sexy. I love the slow development of the relationship, and how both Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo get to be competent and get to be on both sides of the h/c. This put me in mind of some of my favorite space exploration sf.

Summary: "Everybody, this is Adam," says Educator Kari. She's standing next to a skinny kid with red hair, who's still wearing the white and blue jumpsuit they give new people. He's also wearing a cape.

Reccer's Notes: This story makes me so happy. Adam and Jamie meet as kids in the school on their space station and become friends. Like, that's so many of my favorite things in one sentence already, but it's also about neurodiversity and acceptance, and it perfectly translates the grown-up Adam and Jamie into these little kids who are still figuring out who they are. A wonderful story about friendship, love, and science.

Reccer's Notes: This story is set in the Firefly universe, but doesn't talk about any of the characters or plot points from the series or movie. And it uses characters from Chinese mythology, but adapted to the Firefly universe. You don't need to know anything about either (I don't) to enjoy it; it's an interesting story well-told.  A woman marries because of her new husbands family position, but finds out too late he's not a man she wants to spend the rest of her life with.  So she goes off into space to seek her fortune.

Or: The JayTim space opera where there's a fake marriage, a marriage of convenience, and an arranged marriage.

Reccer's Notes: There is so much going on in this fic. Everyone has a secret identity (or multiple!) and a mission that will only be revealed in the fullness of time and also it's IN SPACE??? And there's tons of cool worldbuilding about how the governments of the various planets work and the way the usual cast of Gotham and adjacent superhero crews are mapped onto the space opera setting is just amazing. PLUS, fake marriage shenanigans. You know you want to.

Summary: The fact that Grantaire is in love with Enjolras wouldn't be a problem if Enjolras wasn't completely oblivious, and also a non-corporeal Artificial Intelligence that controls their spaceship.

Combeferre and Courfeyrac think they may die of second hand embarrassment.

Marius thinks everyone is overreacting. After all, nothing can stop true love, can it?

Reccer's Notes: Even if it is totally unrelated to the book, the setting, mood and slow-paced flow of this fic made me think a bit of The long way to a small angry planet while I was reading it. All characters are pretty far removed from canon, but they are interesting on their own and I enjoyed this fic and what Sassaphrass did around Enjolras's sense of self, his link to his crew, the way things are a bit awkward but is still better together, and the open ending.

Space Opera AU, focused on Tony & JARVIS, with Steve, Bruce, Natasha, Clint, Fury, Maria, and original AI characters.

Reccer's Notes: The series that made me love Space AUs. The series that led me to trying (and falling in love with) the Vorkosigan Series. The AU I would take with me if I were stuck on a desert island. Icarus_chained takes the bones of the Marvel universe and builds it into something that actually takes the time to explore the notion of personhood when it comes to AI, the nature of choice, and of empathy. And does it against a backdrop of the expanses of space. If you try nothing else, try this.

A sleepy, extraordinary smile crawls over Victor's face. "Nobody else does it like that. That's why we're going to win."

Reccer's Notes: Yuri on Ice is a young fandom, but Stargazer is already a classic for me: a delightful space AU where the heir to the throne and reigning champion Viktor Nikiforov drops everything to go to a backwater planet and coach an unknown ballist player. I never quite understood why someone would want to write a sport AU for a sport fandom, but here I am, loving it anyways. The made up sport in Stargazer is really interesting and the politics that go with it work really well.
The fic is an art collab with Inknose and beautifully illustrated. There is also a second fic in the same universe, dealing with Yuri and Otabek.

Summary:
A fast ship, a good crew, a treasure, a Clan to lead -- that's all Arthur Pendragon has ever wanted. He sits on the Council, he supports his father's kingship, and he keeps an eye on the Imperial Conglomerate when they come too close to Pirate space.
One day the Conglomerate infiltrates the Clans and poisons the King. Arthur must search for a cure to keep his father alive and the Clans from civil war.
An escape route, a sharp knife, a target, the shadows at his command -- that's all Merlin has ever needed. He fulfills his assignments, he uses the Sterling to sustain his once-royal House in their exile, and wages a private war against the Imperial Conglomerate.
When he learns of an elaborate plot to assassinate him, Merlin does the opposite of what's expected. He flees onto a Pirate ship.
There's a saying among the Pirates: that one's fate is written in the stars. Destiny will always set to rights what has been made wrong.
Arthur and Merlin know that they were meant for the other from the moment they meet. They can feel it from across the galaxies separating them. Nothing can stop them from being together or from fulfilling an ancient prophecy.

Summary: Ray and Frank are the only survivors of the Jersey Queen, an independent freighter hit by (space!) pirates. In the chaos, the doomed ship took a blind jump through the hyperways, leaving them stranded in a dark and lonely quadrant of space.

Mikey and Gerard are the last remaining crew of a legendary "ghost" ship, the Ravenkroft, which has been lost for the fifty years since the War that Broke the Stations. They've been avoiding inhabited space due to emotional scarring from the loss of their crew, and a feeling of isolation due to the fact that they are in fact cyborgs.

They pick up Ray and Frank's escape pod, and promise to help them. In the process, old feeling of guilt are assuaged, new emotional ties are wrought, and the legendary ship comes home.
