Reccer's Notes: The POV character of this Russian-language fic is one of Lan Yi’s white spiritual rabbits—who, taken into the sunlit green world, suddenly has to adjust to not only a custody transfer but an alien habitat and way of life. This story alludes to the fairytales of the Snow Maiden and the rabbit who saved the Buddha, so be prepared for a similar tale of self-sacrificial devotion.

(And yes, the author addresses the question of how the rabbits subsisted in the ice cave—something a lot of Chen Qing Ling viewers had been wondering.)

Speranza’s works are classics in this fandom, and her grasp of the characters’ voices, innovative plots and excellent storytelling will show you why. This was recced on this comm already ten years ago for trope inversion - as unlike most animal transformation fics it’s an animal character to a human not the other way around - and it was more than ten years old then. A real classic, indeed, but absolutely worth a re-read…

Reccer's Notes: This fic takes worldbuilding from Elizabeth Bear's A Companion to Wolves, in which soldiers are psychically bonded to really smart wolves. This takes the tragedy of Tony's superhero origin story (Ho Yinsen's death) and makes it a thousand times more intimate. Instead of a man he only just met dying, it's the animal he's been psychically bonded to for most of his life who dies, and he is correspondingly even more messed up than in canon. And then he has to deal with Steve, whose wolf is still alive, who has what he lacks. It leads to some really interesting dynamics and some great hurt/comfort.

Reccer's Notes: Minisonoo is a marvellous writer, well known in X-Men fandom. In Harry Potter she enjoyed writing complex, plotty fix-its for Cedric Diggory, and that carried her over, briefly, into Twilight to explore Edward Cullen and, especially, Jake's Quileute tribe. These two brief HP stories are backstory for Cedric, in which Minisinoo imagines him forging close ties with an elder and others of the Ojibway tribe, accidentally acquiring a badger raccoon as his familiar, and politely schooling Dumbledore about different magical cultures. Minisinoo uses Cedric's Hufflepuff identity as a cultural link with tribal people, writing from her own Indian roots, and the stories are beautifully crafted, nuanced, and touching. Very highly recommended.

Reccer's Notes: When Nicky is haunted by what he's experienced, he is forced to take leave and recuperate. From there, the story becomes a sweet, fun, mortal AU meet-cute. When Nicky attends Nile's wedding to Booker, he meets best-man Joe, to their instant mutual attraction. Then it turns out that Joe is the vet for Nile and Booker's animals while Nicky is house/pet-sitting during the honeymoon. Nicky and Joe continue spending time with other as their friendship -- and attraction -- deepens and grows, facilitated by cute animals and snarky Andy and Quynh. Plenty of fluff and good food and gorgeous art from Gness add up to a delightful story.

Content Notes: First part of story deals with a refugee crisis, and people in danger in over-crowded boats. Several drown, including a small child that Nicky is unable to save.

This story is sweet and funny and comfortable, and makes me wish there were more Harveys to engender peace and acceptance in the world.

John reached down into the box and lifted up Rodney. It was weird, but he looked a little like Rodney, right down to the tufty hair and the malevolent glare being shot his way. "Hey, you know who I am, right?"

"Rarr!" Lizard-Rodney growled, showing some wickedly sharp little fangs. John grinned, "Oh my God, Rodney. You're a cute little lizard, aren't you?"

"Dinosaur," said one of the biologists whose name he hadn't quite memorized yet.

"What?"

Nameless biologist pointed at Rodney's feet. "He's got three toes. Lizards have five, dinosaurs have three."

John was about to reply when Lizard... Dino-Rodney started snuffling at his jacket. "What?" Rodney grabbed at the edge of the pocket zipper with his tiny front claws and yanked. "Hey! Cut it out!" Rodney made another lunge at John's jacket and managed to rip a hole with his teeth, through which he grabbed half a bar of chocolate John had been saving. The chocolate was gone in four bites, along with the foil, wrapper and some pocket lint. Then Rodney sighed, nuzzled John's chin, and fell asleep wrapped around John's arm.

Reccer's Notes: Spaggel got the idea, did an initial cartoon and suggested fic, and moonloon (then maryavatar) delivered. This is packed full of cuteness and is very much fun! I love Rodney as a frisky, curious, greedy little dinosaur, and the way he trusts John implicitly to look after him is just... melty. Heartwarming crack FTW!

Summary: Bucky is so competent that it hurts my feelings is not a rational complaint to have about a person, and yet, after a year of being Captain America and partnering up with Bucky for the new and improved, post-Blip Avengers, that’s kinda how Sam’s feeling.

It’s not great. It maybe leads to Sam making some rash, ill-advised decisions like claiming he has a previously undisclosed superpower, and then getting caught in a web of lies when he ends up actually developing that surprisingly inconvenient superpower. Talking to birds had seemed like a harmless superpower, but it turns out that birds have a lot of opinions, and they don’t hesitate to tell Sam about them, especially when it comes to his supposedly subpar courting skills. Which is ridiculous, because Sam isn’t courting Bucky. Right?

Reccer's Notes: I love these stories, they are so funny and off-the-wall bonkers and sweet. There's a lot of great humor, fun adventures, sweet love, and a lot of birds with a lot of opinions on how Sam should run his love life.

Reccer's Notes: I rec this fic as a Starter rec because it was the first Seliph/Ares fic I ever read, and I absolutely loved it! The writer does a really great job of adapting the canon to this modern day world, with a surprising amount of worldbuilding to it, such that it feels really lived-in despite not being a full longfic. But what I really love is the way Seliph and Ares and their relationship were written - Ares is the prefect mix of 'actually cool' and 'hot mess', Seliph is earnest and determined and chrarismatic and entirely overwhelmed in equal measures, and despite seeming like such different people they have absolutely perfect chemistry right from the outset! And, of course, little Deirdre is just as both cute and annoying as a real kitty should be. :P

Reccer's Notes: A Ladyhawke-based Sentinel cross with Hawaii 5-0 and NCIS, starring Tony DiNozzo and Steve McGarrett. They bonded at first sight, but were hit by a curse; each is their spirit animal (hawk and wolf) part time while the other is human; they see each other as human only for the few seconds of transition twice a day. With the help of the 5-0 team, they've made it work for two years, but things are getting worse. They have to find the curse-caster and force him to free them or they'll never have a normal life. Reccer's Notes: This is a wonderful depiction of John and Rodney as very close platonic friends, going the extra mile (or several) for each other. it's not explicit that they're life partners, but in my head they definitely are, given how far they both go to make the other happy. Rodney notices that John's a bit blue following his father's death and after being repeatedly turned down by the SGC when he tries to get John a dog to cheer him up, uses all his brilliance to make him a robot dog. A very smart robot dog with an trainable AI. But, unfortunately, Rodney's a little too smart for everyone's good, and he almost makes things very much worse before finding a solution. It's a lovely and at times heartrending story, but be reassured that no dogs die, not even robot dogs, and there's an eventual happy ending.

Reccer's Notes: Everyone and their ~~dog~~ sehlat knows that Jim is Spock's significant other. Everyone except Jim. But Jim keeps dropping in on Spock at all hours, sleeping on his couch, and helping him raise an orphaned sehlat cub, all while wishing their domestic bliss was real. Spoiler: It is.
