Author’s Notes: For [archiveofourown.org profile] moonlight69.

I needed to introduce a few additional characters to Hilda’s mainly single-panel world, so I did a mash-up with Norman Rockwell’s “Fixing a Flat.” Think of it as the Illustrationverse.

Reccer's Notes: A rec posted in honor of the U.S. Full Strawberry Moon, for reasons that will be apparent in the fic.

Moon Custafer constructs a story from several Hilda panels (plus a special guest Norman Rockwell work), in which Duane Bryers’ zaftig hillbilly wood nymph comes to the aid of two travelers stranded in the boondocks—a predicament complicated by a less friendly local. (A temporary problem-solving alliance (particularly against a common enemy) can count as a relationship, right?)

Hilda as portrayed in Bryers’ artworks seems to embrace solitude, and the scant fanfic I’ve seen doesn’t tend to show her interacting face-to-face with much of anyone but her animal friends and the odd Authorial Proxy; it’s fun to watch her socializing, and to see her given family, friends, enemies, and a history. (As well as actual clothing that she presumably wears now and then to pick up her crackers, trashy novels, and repurposable-as-clothing floursacks.)

Summary: It’s 2995 B.C. in Ancient Egypt, and Daniel’s marooned with a Sam who’s making moon eyes at him, a Jack’s who’s determined to get under his skin, a ship to repair, a rebellion to plan, and a big pile of Jaffa in the basement. At least Teal’c’s cool. Dedicated to everyone who watched Moebius Part 2 and thought, “WTF did they just do to my Daniel??? Strand him in hell with Teal’c and the Kama Sutra Twits?” I wrote the story to find out, and it turns out maybe it wasn’t so bad after all.

Reccer's Notes: Moebieus is an interesting episode in that they don't actually ... show you the end of the story. There's time travel shenanigans. Daniel (from our timeline) was trapped in ancient Egypt with his team dead, and Jack, Sam, Daniel, and Teal'c from the resulting alternate history go back in time to put things right and alt!Daniel gets killed. But they don't ... show them putting things right! They show up and start the revolution, and that's it. We know that with the resources they have plus our Daniel's knowledge, they're going to be able to fix things. Then we're back to the current day in the right timeline with everyone still alive! (And also, the alt!timeline Jack, Sam, and Daniel are just caricatures played for laughs)

This story fills in the missing bits. Also, takes seriously "what the hell would happen if these caricatures were supposed to be actual people and not just caricatures played for laughs."

Reccer's Notes: And another classic SG1 'Stranded' story. This one might be less well known as it's not on AO3 or (I think) on Eliade's LJ. The style is different here as it's Jack's POV, 1st person, as he and Daniel cope with being stranded off-world on an abandoned gateless planet with some goatlike animals, again possibly permanently. Daniel is up-front about thinking they should have sex, but Jack's a lot more stuck in military prohibitions... initially. Jack's perspective is often amusing and wry, and Eliade's writing is, as ever, incredibly good. Another must-read.

Reccer's Notes: I'm rushing to fit in a couple of classic SG1 'Stranded' stories. This one will be well known - it's an incredibly well done fork in the road story where Jack and Daniel are stranded off-world, possibly permanently. It's about grief and denial, about developing sexual tension, and about them slowly coming to terms and accepting their changed lives. It feels very real and wonderfully in character, and is told from Daniel's POV. A must-read.

Summary: When the gate bridge goes down, what kind of connections arise?

Reccer's Notes: This is a temporary stranding while the Gate Bridge is out of action and the Daedalus busy in the Milky Way, but it still affects the population of Atlantis profoundly, with lasting consequences for John and Rodney. The boys are beset by their usual obliviousness and mutual pining, and misunderstandings arise before the course of their relationship can run true. The UST is intensified by the Stargate being closed until they figure out the Bridge issue, and by John's insistence on daily sparring sessions with all four of the team. Eventually, of course, everything comes right! An enjoyable read.

Summary: John stops wearing his uniform on the two thousand and second day after they arrive.

Reccer's Notes: This is a classic, and for good reason. John tells the story of an AU Atlantis, cut off from Earth for way longer than in canon, and how they survive and, indeed, thrive. The story's structure is great, with John telling us how many days have passed when important events happen. It's short, highly effective, and the ending is very satisfying.

Summary: It had taken a week for Rodney and Radek to confirm that the gate had well and truly stopped working. No one could account for it. It had taken a month for Elizabeth to decide that returning Atlantis to Earth was their best option. It had taken another month to prepare, the scientists working tirelessly to maximize the one ZPM they had left.

It had taken just three days to convince Elizabeth to leave them behind.

Reccer's Notes: This is a gentle, domestic look at the team continuing on in Pegasus with the Athosians after the Gate stops working, and after Elizabeth orders the city flown back to Earth to see what's happened. It's an hour or so in their life, domestic, low-key, and very satisfying.

Summary: The first time John had laughed in God, what? A month? Had been when the scientist from the alternate universe insulted someone John couldn't see.

John hated how pathetic it sounded even in his own head, but he hadn't been lying about the conversation. It'd been... cool, to meet someone new, who obviously wasn't a threat. Someone who didn't have the same pinched look of desperation that everyone on Atlantis did. John had no idea if the stupid rock was going to prove useful for anything other than Skyping with one guy from another dimension, but John was honest enough to admit he didn't care. It was the one good thing he had to look forward to.

Reccer's Notes: This story starts with John from a Daedalus Variations AU (the alt-John who helps canon-team on the Daedalus when alien fighters attack the ship) who lives in a stranded Atlantis cut off from Earth, in a Pegasus galaxy where there are no Wraith but the high-tech, aggressive aliens are maybe worse. He's worn out and has lost too many friends when he finds the weird smooth stone that (of course) is Ancient tech, and which turns out to be a cross-dimensional connector. In a different canon AU (SG1's The Road Not Taken), Rodney and Radek are stuck in Siberia in the Ori war and while not in imminent threat of death, are oppressed and exploited. Rodney investigates a similar stone at his end which leads to the first link with John, There's a ton of drama and plot, some lovely competence porn when Rodney and Radek get involved in helping John's universe, and a happy ending for them all. A really great read!

Reccer's Notes: A mission gone wrong story where John has an unfortunate encounter with Ancient tech that leaves him stuck on another world entirely, with logistical problems getting to and dialing the Stargate there. Through alternating POVs, we see John's desperation and determination, and via Rodney, the rest of his team's frantic efforts to find him. Nicely gripping, with a satisfying ending and an unexpected bonus for Rodney. (You need to be logged into AO3 to read it.)

Megatron and Rodimus crash-land on an asteroid and must Indiana Jones their way to freedom. Stuck inside a weird, creepy temple, these former enemies have to deal with deadly traps, low fuel and the omnipresent, mutual contempt they hold for each other.

Reccer's Notes:
It's been nearly a year since Transformers had a rec on this comm, so here I come bearing the gift of hot robot action, ka-chow.

This story is very firmly grounded in the 2005 IDW comics canon. That said, I think it's plenty enjoyable without having read all 200-odd issues of an admittedly niche media. The snark is very strong here, and Megatron and Rodimus have a fascinating antagonism going on this early into their shared command of the Lost Light. As for plot, it's meaty enough to call this a casefic. Besides arguing about their complicated personal history, they also bicker over the best way to escape.

A note about smut:Transformers have like five different ways of having sex. The porn here is pretty beginner-friendly (read: human-coded), if you're worried about how the hell do they do it. Megatron bottoms here, which is great.

Summary: Stranded on the planet Sigma Nox while searching for a missing away team, Spock and Kirk find themselves pitted against a disturbing native life form. With the captain out of commission on a regular basis and Spock struggling to preserve his stoicism, staying alive is difficult enough – but when a slim chance for escape surfaces, their resolve is truly put to the test. Together they must fight for survival in the heart of an alien jungle, and in the process, uncover the mystery of the planet's past. Slow build K/S.

Content Notes (from the author): Minor character death. Mind control themes and sort-of-zombies. Dark at times due to twisted xenobiological shenanigans. Mild themes of stress-related weight loss. Heaps of TOS references and/or spoilers. Eventual smut. Freakishly long chapters.

Reccer's Notes: I was like, surely this has already been recced here approximately a million times, but it has not?? Not even once?? Let's fix that: The worldbuilding is amazing. The jungle feels like a real ecosystem as Jim and Spock learn how to survive amongst its weird and sometimes hostile life forms. The original character is original indeed, and a great addition to the team. The story is tense, suspenseful, and rewarding. Let's goooooo.

Summary: Post-canon, lost and with no one to rely on for rescue, Sheppard and McKay try not to give in to 'making do'.

Reccer's Notes: The title resonates through this story in several ways - At the start John attends Rodney's wedding to Jennifer Keller, having never told Rodney about his feelings for him. Then a jumper wormhole drive test flight goes badly wrong and they're stranded together on an alien world for a long time, and neither of them can be with their partners. They of course become even closer, for survival and comfort, but there's no partner betrayal (well, technically not - emotionally is another story). Then, at the end, their previous relationships are forced to change due to them having been MIA for so long. It ends happily and realistically, and throughout the fic I really enjoyed how adult and sensible everyone was in their relationships. The alien planet worldbuilding is also great - they didn't reach it via a stargate so it's not terraformed, and is much more alien than canon. A wonderful read. (Note that you need to be logged in to AO3 to read it.)

Summary: When SG-4 is ambushed offworld, an injured Major John Sheppard must put his trust in a Tok'ra agent named McKay to survive. But what secrets is McKay keeping about his mission, the planet, and his own motives for helping John?

Reccer's Notes: Told entirely from John Sheppard's point of view, this is the story of a man left behind, injured and stranded, and the man--people?--trying to help him. Also, a couple hundred Jaffa. It's an interesting mystery, with some heartbreak along the way, and very satisfying read overall. Mad Maudlin writes well, her inner John Sheppard believably snarky, resourceful, and surprisingly vulnerable.

I like this story and re-read it at least once a year. I like her John Sheppard and her Rodney McKay, as individuals just meeting. And the mystery is...deep. Enjoy!

Summary: It's not about being shipwrecked; it's about what happens when you have to come back.
Title, inspiration, and heavy imagery drawn from the poem Possibilities of Love by Ed Kleinschmidt.

Reccer's Notes: As the summary says, this more about the aftermath to being stranded, once they've been rescued - the adjustment to being back in Atlantis. They were alone together on a tropically hot planet at a beach by a river, and eventually became everything to each other. But back in Atlantis, John tries to turn himself into Colonel Sheppard again, where DADT is a constant issue and he could never have what he wanted. The ending is open, but definitely hopeful. Based on a love poem, the fic is lyrical and the memories of their stranding dreamlike. This is a part I especially liked: "When John sleeps, he dreams of being free. And then he wakes, and Atlantis sings in his ears, and he puts on his best impression of himself and tries to fit himself back into the shape he'd left behind him."

An enemies-to-lovers Stizzy, then Steddyhands story from Izzy’s PoV. Happy Ending!

Reccer's Notes: This was written pre-season 2, so it is an alternative take on how Stede and Ed would be reunited. Ed leaves Stede and Izzy on a deserted island while he goes to deal with other stuff. Stede and Izzy must survive together, grow closer, and fall into each other's arms. There is a lot of internal conflict from Izzy who is clearly in love with Ed, but is beginning to experince feelings for Stede. The story also contains some wonderful art pieces because it was created for a big bang.

A photograph with text added to the top: 'Stranded, at Fancake.' The photo is of an astronaut in a full space suit sitting on a bench at a dilapidated bus stop on the side of a rural road with nothing but empty grassland behind it. The astronaut is holding a piece of cardboard with EARTH? written on it, as if hitchhiking. On a pole by the bus shelter there's a small sign with alien script. The photograph's colors are desaturated, mainly greens, blues, and browns, and the landscape is bleak, yet the astronaut's steady bearing and stoic anonymity give it a whimsical feel.
