Fandom: Justified, Walking Dead
Characters/Pairings: Gen - Raylan Givens, Boyd Crowder, Ava Crowder, Tim Gutterson, Rachel Brooks, Loretta McCready, Carl Grimes, Darryl Dixon, Michonne
Rating: Teen
Length: 11,696
Content Notes: zombie apocalypse-typical levels of the killing of zombies, but no other AO3 notes apply
Creator Links: vain_glorious on AO3
Theme: Competence, friendship, families of choice, AU: zombies, crossovers and fusions
Summary: A man in a hat meets a boy in a hat, following the zombie apocalypse.
"Can’t just leave him here,” Loretta says.
“Yes, we can,” Raylan counters. “Our camp has a full count of crazy hillbillies with crossbows.”
Reccer's Notes: Continuing the theme of competence in the face of zombies, here's the survival team I'd pick: the main cast of Justified, including Boyd (highly competent at stealing what they need) and Loretta (who manages to grow weed even in the endtimes). It's a crossover with Walking Dead, but you don't need to know that show to enjoy it. Vain_glorious often writes dark or open-ended, angsty stories, but I think the zombie apocalypse itself was enough darkness here, so the story's ultimately hopeful. Bang on characterisations and wonderful writing, from a somewhat beleaguered Raylan's pov as he tries to hold it all together and stop Boyd from killing people. A great read, darkly humorous in places, and actually not too violent, for the genre.
