Comments are very much appreciated! ^.^b

Author’s Notes:

Listen, I know the premise of this fic is actually insane, but it somehow works really well.
The 'message crystals' they have work on some form of minor telepathy - they don't 'type' as such. That's all the explanation we are getting :3 Format best viewed on a desktop, but it doesn't matter too much I don't think!

On with the show

Reccer's Notes: Despite the author’s disclaimer, I read this just fine on a $10 3G flip phone.

This freewheeling bawdy Muppet Song turned epic saga got a lot of the fandom through quarantine; I admit to shoehorning it into the “serious” category, but an author (who isn’t writing for pay) doesn’t sustain a story through four years and 132 chapters without putting something resembling thought into it; a skeletal outline of the canon plot (with more survivors and a lot more innuendo) remains faintly visible.

Summary: The Turningverse is a series of stories that interweave with both canon "West Wing" episodes and each other. Each one is self-contained, so feel free to begin anywhere you feel moved to do so.

Reccer's Notes: THE big Sam/Josh fic, and it earns all of its accolades! The author is incredibly knowledgeable about the day-to-day realities of political campaigners and White House staffers, flawlessly interspersing their own original scenes with canon. And the central relationship is so perfectly, tragically flawed: two men who are intrinsically drawn to one another, struggling to overcome the lack of privacy inherent to their position, burgeoning resentment, and some of the most heart-breakingly realistic internalised homophobia I've read in a long time. And that's not to mention the fic's version of Lisa, Sam's initial fiance, who becomes a very important character just as flawed and with just as complicated a relationship with Sam and Josh as they have with another. I devoured these fics and never wanted to stop!

However, be aware that the final fic of the series (the intended second-last part) was never fully completed. As a result, the series never reached the point where the couple gets back together for good. I recommend ending with 'Interlude for two voices' if you can't bear that; I sure stayed there for a while until I could bring myself to go on! :')

Summary: Historical AU. In 1947 New York, a motley group of strangers are about to come face-to-face with the idea that you can catch a criminal from within his own mind.

Author’s Notes: Honestly, this came about because of Garcia's hair. Yes, Garcia's hair. Follow me here. There was an episode where she was wearing it in this marvelous retro-40's do, and I started picturing how she'd look in a whole 40's ensemble. And then I started picturing the entire cast in 40's styles. (Boy howdy, would it suit Reid, and Morgan would rock a fedora like nobody's business.) Then I started thinking about how different their lives would have been sixty years ago, and then the social and cultural upheaval of an entire nation coming back from WWII, and . . . well . . . enjoy.

Historical Note: Shell shock was the World War I term, and battle fatigue the WWII term, for what we now call PTSD.

Reccer's Notes: A post-WWII noir mystery AU in which an oddly assorted bunch of cops, academics, veterans, and civilians, coordinated by their friendly neighborhood reference librarian and gossip networker, band together to solve some violent local crimes—and proceed to pioneer criminal profiling in the process.

(When this fic debuted in October 2010, the mystery of Reid’s chronic migraines was an ongoing canon subplot; this setting provides a ruthlessly plausible explanation. That’s all I’m going to say.)

Summary: What started out as an attempt to learn flight of the bumble bee on the trumpet evolved into a fascination with the green hornet theme song. Although the show featured one of my favorite Martial Artist ..Bruce lee..the main attraction for me was the frentic trumpet solo performed by another hero of mine Mr. Al hirt. This song was also used in the motor cycle scene in kill bill. I was delighted to learn that they were making a movie version in 2011 starring Seth Rogen and Jay Chou..Alas there could be only one Bruce lee as well as one Al hirt. However I decided to perform this cover in tribute to Al and Bruce...Enjoy

This is a repost (it's all over the internet in various formats and languages) but it is mine.

I wrote this a looong time ago, before I really had a GREAT understanding of the naming conventions used in the untamed. Some of it might be incorrect.

Reccer's Notes:: Although November’s Mystery & Suspense theme would apply, I’m using Uncommon Settings to shoehorn in this beloved modern-with-magic paranoir fic in time for Halloween; the intrigue-haunted waterfront city of Lotus, patterned after Venice, is very much a character in its own right. (Note that, despite the geographical inspiration, nobody seems to have been whitewashed.)

Summaries: for Real Boys:
Ray looked out from between his fingers. The creature was there, on the other side of Mr. Thug, and it had lots of silvery fur and teeth that would be gleaming really nicely if the 'liner hadn't gone and taken most of the light with it. Between Mr. Thug and Ray, there was a pair of tall boots. Tilting his head back, Ray looked up, up past the red jacket all the way to the head, which was wearing a wide-brimmed hat. On the face under the hat there was a small smile.

"What the," Ray said. "Who the."

for Real Worlds:
"His existence is a violation of Armistice Statute—"
"God laws."
"Yes."
It took only one long stride for Ray to get into Thatcher's space and to her credit she didn’t back down. "You're gonna quote God laws at me?" He jabbed her with a stiff finger. "Who's playin God here, huh? You wave the fucking God laws at me while you got Fraser strapped to a table somewhere so you can put his fucking brains in a blender and take what he is? Look in a fucking mirror, lady."
"For some reason I can't fathom, Mr. Kowalski, I like you, so I'm going to give you a piece of advice." Her chin came up. "You might watch your words. Unless you want to join Fraser on charges of sedition."
"What?" Vecchio was incredulous. "You're yankin me, right? Fraser’s a kitchen appliance, but he's man enough to be brought up on charges? How the Jee does that compute?"

A sequel to Real Boys:
Three years raising sheep on Clementine, and it all comes crashing down in a skip storm, some consequential psychosis, a kidnapping and a global catastrophe. He may be the universe's punching bag, but Ray will fight for freak love. He's getting Fraser back, God Laws be damned.

Reccer's Notes: There are very few AUs that put the due South characters into spaaace! This is a fusion with the Bladerunner universe where Fraser's an android looking for the killers of his AI father and partners up with Ray Kowalski, a futuristic but very recognisable CPD cop. Salieri's a marvelous writer who takes aspects of the Bladerunner universe and expands on them with extraordinary worldbuilding to tell a complex and riveting tale. There's a gradually developing relationship between Ray and Fraser, nefarious villains, and anti-android laws that wrench the boys apart so that both Rays have to fight to get Fraser back. A triumph, and a due South classic. Here's a quote from a comment by Moth: "The other day I was talking to a friend about Philip K. Dick adaptations and I said that it was funny how one of the best adaptations out there was a due South fanfic. So I went and searched for it to see if it lived up to my memories and it actually exceeded them. This is the best type of AU, one that transplants the canon characters, storylines, and themes to a new universe, while also commenting on the both the canon as well as the nature of fiction." It's also a bloody good read!

Reccer's Notes: Okay; what’s the September 2025 Food & Cooking theme even for if this classic doesn’t circle around for a threepeat? (Twelve years since the last mention should be a sufficient interval.)

This brilliant crossover, all the more poignant in hindsight, nails both Bourdain’s voice and the Narnian sense of place, painstakingly hitting all the beats: Food Porn; Food Gorn (with the acknowledgement that the difference between the two is in the palate of the beholder); departure from what Diana Wynne-Jones would term the Guided Tour into Parts Unknown, with the aid of knowledgeable locals; hospitality in austere circumstances; martial arts (with thought given to the size logistics!); scary local politics; above all, food as a vehicle of cross-cultural understanding.

“No Reservations: Narnia” has the additional distinction of being RPF that not only reached but impressed the subject:

“This is astonishingly well written with an attention to detail that’s frankly a bit frightening…I’m both flattered and disturbed. I think I need a drink.”—Anthony Bourdain.

The fic gets VERY metafictiony very quickly (complete with de-fictionalised versions of some of the 'Charmed and Dangerous' fics Justin wrote in-universe, and even reviews by fellow 'Jalan' shippers!) and will be a massive nostalgia trip for anyone who was in fandom circa 2010! And despite the crack, the relationship itself is very grounded: Justin and Alex are overstepping normal sibling boundaries big-time but are self-aware enough to realise how incredibly Not Normal this situation is and don't rush to try to define their relationship. This is a story of two cultivators being in love, thinly disguised as a story of a case investigation. My Significant Otter, joolita, to whom this fic is dedicated, has described it as ‘an ocean of cheese at the foot of a mountain of fluff’. You have been warned.

Reccer's Notes: This one’s got everything: Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji as teachers to Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi, and four younger Lan junior OCs; dialogue by turns hilarious, stately, and poignant; poetic fairytale prose perhaps colored by the author’s native Polish; a casefic of unfurling complexity with an intelligent, subtle, and tragic antagonist; Wei Wuxian’s (and Lan Wangji’s) magical inventiveness on display; mysterious uncharted musical magic—the climactic confrontation is an elaborate musical-cultivational ritual that deserves to be animated.

This fic is set during the movie In The Beginning, which is Londo telling all the backstory of the series--how the Earth-Minbari War happened and how that led to the creation of Babylon 5. While he's telling that story, he's holding John Sheridan and Delenn captive. Not by choice, but because he himself is being imprisoned in his own body by an alien parasite.

Reccer's Notes: TOS, being FIRMLY in the era of "each episode stands completely alone and there are no plot or character arcs" occasionally had deeply important character information that it would drop like a bomb in one episode and then ignore completely. One of those facts is that Kirk is a genocide survivor! He was 13 when the colony he was on had a famine and the governor decided to handle it by killing half the population. Several authors took this bit of TOS backstory and gave it to AOS Kirk, with great effect. This is one of the best.

The worldbuilding is complex and detailed, and the sentinels and guides are as varied as RL people; there's no "set" way for either of them to act and/or react; we see difficult adjustments as well as easy adjustments. The series is sweeping and expansive and totally engrossing.
Over different stories, Dasha brings in characters from a number of other fandoms, but knowledge of those fandoms is not necessary. Dasha deals with the characters, not the fandom, and they can be regarded as OCs if the reader doesn't know them, learning about these guest characters as our main characters do.
Previously recc'd in July 2022 for Crossovers.

Content Notes: Some stories deal with kidnappings, and/or other typical bad-guy actions.

Summary: A Modern day Merlin AU set at the University of St Andrews, featuring teetotal kickboxers, secret wizards, magnificent bodyguards of various genders, irate fairies, imprisoned dragons, crumbling gothic architecture, arrogant princes, adorable engineering students, stolen gold, magical doorways, attempted assassination, drunken students, shaving foam fights, embarrassing mornings after, The Hammer Dance, duty, responsibility, friendship and true love...

Reccer's Notes: I've only ever seen about half a Merlin ep, so I'm sure there's stuff I can't fully appreciate about this modern AU where Merlin and Arthur are roommates at university, but I never felt like I was missing anything. The character development and world building are excellent and this fic truly stands on its own. It's been a while since I read it, though, so I can't offer content notes, but the author has some in the tags.

Summary: Chakotay and Tuvok develop a tentative friendship, set against the backdrop of a storytelling group which has grown up spontaneously on Voyager. As Kathryn Janeway tries to adjust to the changes if Voyager created by the presence of the story telling circle, she also tries to deal with her own beliefs about the nature of command... and to help Tom Paris through a rough spot in his own life.

Reccer's Notes: A remarkable "braided novel" of 8 novels and novellas. Too sprawling (in the grand sense) in scale and reach to reduce to a mere synopsis; let us just say that this is what Voyager could have been if TPTB had been willing to seriously deal with the implications of two enemy crews depending on one another, far from home, in a dangerous quadrant.  With gripping plots and wonderful characterizations, Macedon and Peg tackled issues of faith, community, alienation and belonging, honest conflict between Maquis and Starfleet, and the realities of life far from home and safety, and all with discretion and grace. This series really explores what life and community are like on board Voyager in a way few fics do, making it into a community that feels real and has depth to it.

And it fits this rec category because Macedon (aka Little Otter) really leaned into Chakotay's heritage. The central premise that kicks off the fic is "what if Chakotay started a talking/storytelling circle in the pattern of several of the Native American tribes of the midwest?"

Also, Macedon wrote another wonderful Trek fic about an OC with Native American heritage who, after some trauma, goes to the reservation to heal, which I recced only 6 months ago. It's called Wisdom and Beauty and the rec is here.

This is a funny fic, with a playful John and a Rodney whose curiosity is dangerously overclocked, but it does contain some ableist language in its humor.

Reccer's Notes: In one of the very early episodes of Torchwood, Jack Harkness has a throwaway line about never being pregnant again, and of course it got latched onto. This takes that, and all the crazy things that happen regularly around/to Jack Harkness, and does a different and, I think, pretty unique take on what could happen. This story manages to also slot itself perfectly into canon and keep everyone true to character, while also presenting a pretty believable future. The time travel doesn't enter the story until about halfway through, but it's integral to the story.

Summary: Dean’s your typical half-orphaned, monster-killing 22-year-old until a trenchcoated stranger crashes into his back windshield one September night, claiming he’s an angel that knows him from the future and that he’s on the run.

Frigging fantastic.

(Or, in which Castiel gets stuck in Dean’s timeline preseries and Dean kind of hates it—until he doesn’t.)

Reccer's Notes: The moment this fic was posted it became an instant classic, and for good reason: time travel plots involving Castiel aren't too uncommon, but few commit to the premise as earnestly and capably as this one. The Dean of this fic is perfectly characterised, still recognisably himself but with an impulsive and lonely edge that clearly distinguishes him from even Season 1 Dean. And while Castiel isn't the POV character, his clear fondness for this younger Dean mirrors our own, and gives a special edge to the pining: from his position, the man he loves suddenly does not recognise him. But alongside the pitch-perfect longing, there is a genuinely compelling plot that will have you on the edge of your seat! Quite frankly, I was only surprised to see that it hadn't been recced here already!

Summary: A serial story of what-if: what if Cam had been a little more injured, and what if Jack's clone had been a little less willing to walk away.

Reccer's Notes: Colonel Jack O'Neill was cloned in an episode of SG-1; the clone looks like he's sixteen, but has all of Jack's memories.   At the end of the episode, he was given a cover identity and went back to high school, pretending he really was that age, and was never seen or mentioned on camera again.  Cameron Mitchell was a pilot who was shot down defending SG-1 over Antarctica, and almost died.  In canon he was perfectly healed, but there is a canon-AU in which he was confined to a wheelchair and permanently disabled.  This Cam is somewhere in between.  Broken Wings is a fascinating look at what might have been if the two had met, and become partners.  It's beautifully written, and with a deep understanding of what it means to live with a disability.  The story isn't about Cam's disability, but about their life together, with a realistic picture of how Cam's disability affects every aspect of their lives.  It's not written for effect or for disability porn; it is what it is.

Back in the heydey of SG-1 fandom, [personal profile] ivory_gates was [personal profile] synecdochic's frequent partner in crime, and the two shared a couple of AUs.  One of them is the Mezzanine-verse, in which they redid the Broken Wings premise (though not its plot) with a genderbent Cameron Mitchell.  It, too, is very good.

Summary: A startling confession sends Miles Vorkosigan's life to the left when it might have gone to the right.

Reccer's Notes: This is a classic of the Vorkosigan series. It was the first major slash fic in the fandom, and the first longfic. There had been Vorkosigan fic before this one, of course, but not much; at the time, canons that were seen as really high-quality didn't tend to get fic, because it was seen as gilding the lily. Apart from the occasional missing scene, what could one write that would be as good/interesting as the original? This series kicked the doors open and inspired a lot of people to try their hand at fanfic. It's really well-written, and also has a lot to say about the Vorkosiverse characters, and showed just how much scope there is for fan authors to explore even when the original canon is highly regarded.

Alternate summary, according to TV Tropes: A man attempts to escape slavery by turning into one of his culture heroes, teaching his daughter how to do magic, killing people, and flower arranging.

Reccer's Notes: A few years ago, a massive wave of fanon about Tatooine slave culture swept through Star Wars fandom. It all originated from [tumblr.com profile] fialleril and their friends. Fia was amazing at both worldbuilding and writing. This series is the longest of her Star Wars fics and series, and it is so good. It's about Anakin realizing he's a slave to Palpatine ... and that he has cultural resources to help him deal with that. And so he turns himself into a double-agent, resisting his master in the ways his culture taught him to. The writing is good, the worldbuilding is excellent. Not just for Tatooine, but also Naboo. I love it.

Note: Fia had massive problems with certain elements of the Sequel Trilogy, such that even mentioning it could be a trigger. And yet people kept sending them asks and comments about Sequel Trilogy stuff despite clearly and consistently asking people not to. Sometime in 2019, they stopped participating in fandom, and my hunch is it was at least partly over people not respecting that boundary. Please don't be awful.

Summary: Lust Over Pendle is a comedy of manners set in the Golden Age detective thriller genre, and is presumed to take place after the end of the seventh Harry Potter book, and, therefore, after the fall of Voldemort. A paparazzo photographer takes a compromising photograph of two young men on an tropical beach and unwittingly brings about an alliance between the two most fearsome witches in the country. Family conflict, leaky roofs, unscrupulous journalists, unexpected engagements, random werewolves and probably the two daftest dogs in fanfiction.

Reccer's Notes: This series is a wonderful collection of novels and short stories that go AU before Half-Blood Prince. They are absolutely addictive, hitting every note from humor to pathos to angst and back again, while cheerfully and lovingly skewering British society of all levels and regions. AJ Hall has a deft hand at genre, weaving elements from mysteries, adventure novels, comedy of manners, farces, and sometimes tragedy into a fun romp with a heart. I opened up the page to find a summary for the series, and two hours later I resurface to actually post the rec. It's slightly annoying that you have to download the stories as ebooks and can't just read them online, but trust me it is well worth the hassle.  (Yes, the author is on AO3, but only the secondary stories in this series are uploaded--the main ones can only be read by downloading them from the website.)

Summary: When Bajor hosts an interstellar music festival, to which a very unusual star singer is invited, Jake must face questions about friendship, manhood and culture, as well as freedoms of belief.

Reccer's Notes: This is my favorite of Macedon's stories, in large part because I love how he writes Vulcans. Macedon's greatest gift is the ability to take an idea, a theme, a moral (or a set of them, for his longer works) and make them come to life in the lives and thoughts of his characters. He explores issues realistically, without ever becoming preachy or moralistic or filled with platitudes, and he does it because everything (plot, theme, world-building, etc.) flows naturally from the lives of his characters. He makes every character he writes (original or not) be realistic, three-dimensional, and fascinating. Jeu-Parti is the story of Jake Sisko, the son of Commander Benjamin Sisko, and his relationship with a Vulcan named Salene. But it's also about choosing to be different, about choosing to pursue your dreams at the expense of normality, about dealing with society's disapproval, about friendship, about love, about family, about mental illness, about the difficulty of building a relationship--friendship or other--across cultural lines.  It does all that while being an engaging and entertaining series that I love to read and re-read.

Summary: TOS crackvid based on the... psychedelic nature of a fair few of the show's episodes. Or: Evidence that the crew of the original Enterprise was totally on the Good Stuff throughout their 5-year mission!

Reccer's Notes: This has been one of my favorite TOS fanvids since I first saw it over a decade and a half ago. There are so many TOS episodes where either the writers must have been on something, or the characters canonically were out of their heads for one reason or another. Star Trek was a groovy, trippy show, and it was the 60s, man. This vid perfectly and humorously captures that.

Alas, it is no longer available online with credit to the original vidder, because Youtube took it down over a copyright claim and the pre-youtube places it was available are no longer online. The original vidder put it back up on Youtube with different music (which loses like 99% of the fun of the vid), and someone else put the original version of the vid on their own youtube channel without crediting the original creator. Summary: Critique of the anti-Asian racism and confederate apologia in Firefly.

Reccer's Notes: Every few years, the OTW legal team has to argue that a) vidding is fair use and b) vidders shouldn't be prosecuted for things like taking the DRM off a DVD and ripping it at the highest quality to use. This is one of the vids they always use as an example. It is definitely making a statement critiquing the original (in every sense of the word 'critique') and it could not do that without the highest quality clips possible, because it spends most of the vid zoomed in on what was the background of the original scene.

This vid is about (some of) the racism in Firefly. It's about how the series took East Asian aesthetics wholeheartedly, but left Asian people in the background, often as sex workers. And it's about how the series uncomplicatedly took the classic Western trope "glorious rebels who moved into the lawless west instead of giving up" without ever noticing that in real life, such people were racist slaveowning bastards. (Sadly, they didn't also point out that the Native American analog in the series, the Reavers, are literally mindless cannibals, but it's only 2:55 long and they pack an amazing amount into that short time.)

It is so well-done, the editing is perfect and the message is spot-on.

Summary:

Reccer's Notes: This is one of the first fanvids ever made, and may be the earliest one still extant. It was made sometime between 1975-1980 by Kandy Fong, and is very different from what fanvids would later become. Kandy had obtained pieces of film from the Star Trek cutting room floor (i.e. the scraps leftover after the episodes were edited together--alternate takes, cut scenes, and so forth), and put individual stills from those films into slides. Starting in 1975, she began putting on slide shows at Star Trek fan club meetings and conventions, where she would play music while advancing the slides in time with the music. This one is a character study of Spock; for music, it uses a recording of Leonard Nimoy (yes, really) singing "Both Sides Now." Gene Roddenberry liked it and wanted a copy, so they filmed it on a home video recorder in 1986. Over the years, the tape it was on degraded slightly, and although it was copied over to digital media it was never restored. The quality is not great, but I think it's worth sharing anyway. Here's the fanlore page, if you're interested in learning more.

Summary: A classic Kirk/Spock vid to the song "Dante's Prayer" by Loreena McKennitt.

Reccer's Notes: This was made in 2001 (though it has been remastered since) and it is still one of the great classics of TOS fandom and Kirk/Spock fandom in general. The song choice is perfect; so much of Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock hinge around memory and "Remember" and remembering, and that matches with the song's "please remember me" in a haunting, lyric way. This was one of the first digitally edited fanvids, but killa's use of the new technology was spot-on. (The vid has been remastered at least once since.) It's absolutely gorgeous.

Note: this vid was also a pivotal moment in the history of vidding. Prior to this point, the vidding community had been very small, confined to a handful of people with expensive dual VHS editing machines who met up at conventions to show their work. It was considered bad form--stealing, plagiarism--to knowingly re-use a song someone else had used in a vid even in another fandom. And there was already a vid (a Titanic vid) to Dante's Prayer! But Killa's vid was both so different and so phenomenal that people didn't care it broke the taboo. After that, using songs that had previously been used by other people became acceptable practice. Summary: I'm the Doctor. Look me up.

Reccer's Notes: This is the vid that single-handedly changed the conversation about the 10th Doctor. You see, back in 2008 when this video was first made, the 10th Doctor was mostly seen as a lighthearted incarnation, in strong contrast to the angstiness of the 9th Doctor. Except that occasionally he'd do things that weren't so nice and light-hearted. Things that were arrogant, or creepy, or high-handed, or violent. But those were seen as aberrations. And then he'd go back to being this light-hearted guy, right?

Seah and Margie turned that on its head. No, they said with this vid, the 10th Doctor is scary and arrogant and high-handed and violent, with a thin (sometimes very thin) veneer of good cheer and innocent fun over the top. And they found the perfect song for this. Handlebars starts out lighthearted and fun, and descends into megalomania, before returning to the lighthearted fun of the beginning. And they matched clips perfectly to the lyrics.

Summary:

It's six in the morning, and Steve is heading out on a run when he nearly trips over a bouquet of sunflowers on the front steps of his brownstone.

For a second paranoia takes over, and he kicks the flowers a little, waiting for them to explode. They don't. They also came with a card, which he picks up. The front of the card has a tasteful picture of the Brooklyn bridge at sunset. It's very nice and sedate, like the kind of card you would buy to give to your boss. On the inside someone has written a short message in big, shaky block letters.

I AM SORRY FOR SHOOTING YOU.

Steve sits down hard on the steps.

Reccer's Notes: There is a theme with my MCU comfortfic, and it's that Bucky takes charge of himself (however tenuously), realises his agency, takes his own revenge, finds his own support network, and figures out how to heal along the way. These kinds of fics just give me so many feelings! The Goddamn Kids in this one are some of my favourite OCs, and the fact that Bucky does not heal in a linear, perfectly complete way is so real and wonderful.

And on a personal note Bucky calling Steve sweetheart or honey or babydoll is just my favourite thing ever.

If you're not familiar with the fic, please do heed the tags/warnings as some of the coping mechanisms Bucky uses are not healthy, and the characters do discuss his (and their) past abuse and trauma.

Summary: The mission resets abruptly, from objective: kill to objective: protect

Reccer's Notes: What is there to say?! This is possibly the first fic I think of anytime I consider what Captain America fic would I rec, and I don't think anyone who's read any CA fic would not have read it. Bucky struggles to find himself, and a new mission, and along the way finds a home, a family, and friends. I just had a look back over the fic and wow, so many people love this one! The sheer number of collections it's been added to, and works inspired by the fic is just amazing! The fandom loves this fic, it is warm and soft and sassy and sweet and I could read it again and again. And the best part of cause is that it's just the beginning of the Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series.

Perhaps the Fic trailer by [archiveofourown.org profile] shirasade would be a good place to start if you haven't read this fic and think you might like to. And then chose your fic version below!

Summary: Five years after Voldemort's defeat, Harry returns to England to help re-open Hogwarts.

Reccer's Notes: I'm shocked this has never been recced, because it's one of the classic pre-AO3 HP fics. (It was written while the books were still coming out, so it wasn't AU when it was written.) Hogwarts has always been Harry's home, and it needs him, so he goes. This story is about trauma, and recovery, and healing, both for Harry and for Hogwarts itself.

Summary: Wednesday struggles to feel comfortable with her identity as an Addams and a mother, while living in a world that is far too normal.

Reccer's Notes: This is a classic because it takes the world of the movies and explores what that means for the characters. What does it mean to be an Addams? Specifically, what does it mean to Wednesday to be an Addams, especially while away at college and thus outside the family's world among "normal people"? What does being an adult woman mean to her, as an Addams? And then, having been out in the world, what does it mean to go home? It's full of wry humor and she feels so real, and I'd love to read more.  It's one of my go-to fics for this fandom.

Summary: "Commander Spock, we have located your son," the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock's face that he's never heard of this kid before in his life. "If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week."

Reccer's Notes: Jim Kirk jumps face first into being the other parent to Spock's (adopted) kid, and I love it so much. Jim makes a perfectly illogical commitment and then follows through with all his heart, and I love the way their partnership grows as they learn how to take care of Storek, and each other. A favorite comfort read.

Theme: novel length, old fandoms, fork in the road AU, fixit, plotty fic, post-canon, fandom classic, epic works, enemies working together

Summary: Raptor 718 wasn't lost randomly; an Eight on board was ready to switch sides in the Cylon civil war. With the passengers of Raptor 718 being held prisoner on the Colony, the events on Galactica unfurl differently. (Season 4.5 AU fic, and Kara-poof-free.)

Reccer's Notes: This is one of my favorite season 4.5 AUs. It's no less angsty than canon for 4.5, but in this story the angst flows naturally from the characters and their actions, instead of being forced for DRAMA. And there is no mystical WTF-ery or abandoning technology, either. Just good, taut storytelling in the best tradition of Battlestar Galactica.

Warnings: Contains rape. The actual rape happens off-screen and is not the main plot, but the impact of it echoes through the rest of the fic. In addition to the rape, there is other talk of sexual assault.

Summary: Xander's real family challenge: After the collapse of Sunnydale, Jack gets a call about a woman he knew over twenty years ago...and the son he didn't know he had.

Reccer's Notes: "X Character is related to Y character!" is one of the standard ideas for a crossover story (though oddly it seems less popular than it was a decade ago), and this is one of the best of that style of story. Jack and Xander find out they're father and son, and build a relationship as family. It's not quite found family--because they are actually genetically related--but it hits some of the same emotional marks that found family stories often do.

Summary: "We're all dead to you, aren't we?"

Reccer's Notes:  This is such a great story. It takes a canonical episode from the Second Doctor era, and drops Jack Harkness and Peter and Bunter in the background and focuses on what it's like to be swept out of your own time and having no clue what's happened or why. It's also a meditation on war, on living and dying, and on doing what you have to do in absurd circumstances.

Theme: crossovers, gen, superpowers, psychic powers, AU, fork in the road, competence, epic works, novel-length, fandom classic,

Summary: This started off as yet another Halloween fic. And then it grew...

Reccer's Notes: in an early episode, the characters rent Halloween costumes from a magic costume shop and, while trick-or-treating, turn into the people they're dressed as. There are a lot of fic about what might have happened if one of the characters had chosen a different costume, some of them crossovers; this is my favorite. Xander dresses as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and after it's over, he's left with the knowledge of a Jedi. And uses that knowledge to bootstrap himself into being a Jedi. And has a lot of adventures and meets a lot of people along the way. And grows into a much more mature person than in canon. It's really long, but the best kind of longfic, one that sucks you in and keeps you reading to see what happens next.
