Summary: "You can't possibly be this stupid," is what Rodney finally decides to start with.

Reccer's Notes: This is set considerably before canon, with Rodney as a young (short-term) high school teacher and John his sixteen-year-old student. As is frequently the case in Stargate Atlantis fandom, they fall for each other, and at one point it seems as though Rodney's going to betray his position. A clever - and very hot - fic, if you don't mind the author skating close to statutory rape (but, I promise, not actually going there). In the end all's well, even if they are stuck in Pegasus with life-sucking aliens.

Summary: "He's sitting in a cafe in Vichy France (he was aiming for 2042) and waiting for his lunch when Missy plops down in the chair opposite him." This is an idea they've had before, it's just the first time they've both been able to consider it. The Doctor and Missy try travelling together.

Reccer's Notes: After Twelve loses Clara, Twelve and Missy try travelling together through space and time. Reading Missy and Twelve together in the TARDIS is a delight.  However, the fic digs into the complicated nature of their relationship, gives them a rather tragic backstory, and focuses how they deal with things as they start falling into a romantic relationship and the consequences of that.

Summary: “Can you believe it? How the hell did he end up bagging her?”

Ilya stared, brain not comprehending what his body already seemed to, that Hollander was dating-

“Rose fuckin’ Landry! How does the lamest guy in the League-”

He knew that smile. He thought it was for him, just for him. But it wasn't.

“No,” he whispered. His stomach spasmed.

“You good, Roz?”

Why would he- How could he-

They were holding hands…

“Rozanov? What the fuck?”

He jumped up from the table and stumbled for the front door, just barely making it through before the first mass of petals came up. He heaved as he ran, trying desperately to get away from the pavement, somewhere he could hide what was happening.

Unfortunately, his teammates had followed, because of course they would. He saw a photo of Shane Hollander holding hands with a movie star and promptly threw up.

Who wouldn't be curious?

Reccer's Notes: Hanahaki disease, where a sufferer of unrequited love starts bringing up flowers, has to be one of the crackiest tropes ever. In this story Ilya develops Hanahaki after seeing the pics of Shane going out with Rose Landry. But it's not some gently romantic fluttering of petals from his lips, it's bloodily bringing up a hard, painful tulip bulb, then more flowers, more bulbs. I guess the trope always has a potentially serious outcome (death vs requited love) but to me the "treated seriously" aspects here are the medical details and treatment, the painful and unromantic way the disease affects Ilya, and the way the fic cleverly incorporates his family history, via his mother. Ilya gets very sick indeed before Shane finds out, with inevitable results. Well written, and a great read.

Summary: The Turningverse is a series of stories that interweave with both canon "West Wing" episodes and each other. Each one is self-contained, so feel free to begin anywhere you feel moved to do so.

Reccer's Notes: THE big Sam/Josh fic, and it earns all of its accolades! The author is incredibly knowledgeable about the day-to-day realities of political campaigners and White House staffers, flawlessly interspersing their own original scenes with canon. And the central relationship is so perfectly, tragically flawed: two men who are intrinsically drawn to one another, struggling to overcome the lack of privacy inherent to their position, burgeoning resentment, and some of the most heart-breakingly realistic internalised homophobia I've read in a long time. And that's not to mention the fic's version of Lisa, Sam's initial fiance, who becomes a very important character just as flawed and with just as complicated a relationship with Sam and Josh as they have with another. I devoured these fics and never wanted to stop!

However, be aware that the final fic of the series (the intended second-last part) was never fully completed. As a result, the series never reached the point where the couple gets back together for good. I recommend ending with 'Interlude for two voices' if you can't bear that; I sure stayed there for a while until I could bring myself to go on! :')

Summary: Past may be prologue, but it is not destiny.

Reccer's Notes: This is part of the previously recced Pi'maat series, but I pulled this one out to rec separately because a) it's got a different main character from the rest of the series, and the MCs from the rest of the series are bit players in this one and b) unrequited love is not the main theme, but it's a thread running through it. Though it's a bit of an odd take on it, considering that the person the MC has unrequited love for is her husband. (But they're Vulcans, so it was an arranged marriage.)

The MC has been through hell, abused from childhood (including by her husband--he's genuinely changed, and would never again hurt her, and has been telepathically examined to prove it).

This is a story about healing, about the way the past shapes the present but doesn't have to define it. There's a mystery to be solved, with spies and assassins, and a great adventure plot once the mystery is solved. And through it all, as much as Kiri is healing and getting her life together and serving as the catalyst for great, galaxy-changing events, she craves a loving relationship with her husband, which seems forever beyond her reach.

(I have labelled this as Voyager, because Tuvok is a major character in it, but it's set on Vulcan after Voyager's return, with a cast of 99% OCs + Tuvok and Tom Riker)

Content Notes: Child abuse (non-sexual), domestic abuse, violence (canon-typical), mental illness (depression), mentions of suicide (no on-screen suicidal ideation or actual suicide). Mentions of war, genocide, and other nastiness, all more or less canon-typical, and probably not nearly as grim-dark as I'm making it sound...

Reccer's Notes:
This epic story has been posting across the past two weeks, and is now complete. It's an amazing ride, the absolute epitome of that meme where the book is a juicy hamburger, the movie/tv show is a thin, meagre burger, and the fanfic is a huge luscious stack of burgers two feet high. This story is that last, delicious, fulsome stack all by itself! It's a retelling of the entire story with Robb Stark (in his latest favourite astolat incarnation as the brilliant boy-general and gifted young King of the North), basically fucking his way through the seven kingdoms and creating a huge family (pack) that binds together not only Westeros but also Volantis and much of the East. While doing this, the Starks, Brienne, Jaime, Tyrion, Margaery, Danaerys, Oberon, Sam and all the others we know and love help in their various ways and have their own redemption arcs. It's the ultimate fix-it fic, managing to cram masses of clever plot and action in together with complex psychology, thrilling battles, utter farce, real drama and tragedy, various baddies getting their comeuppance, and feel-good happy endings without sentimentality. It's a triumph. Read it.

Summary: “Who’s that with Jamie?”

“His new girlfriend,” Colin says.

“She’s beautiful.”

Colin and Isaac look at each other, and for a moment there’s some kind of silent conversation going on quite literally over Keeley’s head. “We don’t like her,” Colin says finally.

“What?” Keeley frowns up at them. “Why not?”

Isaac shrugs, his eyes fixed on Jamie and Celia’s table. “She hits when she gets angry.”

Reccer's Notes: What I love the most about this fic - aside from the accurate and undramaticised depiction of abuse - is that it doesn't end with the break-up. It takes a long time to work through the emotional impact of an abusive relationship, particularly when a whole new romantic relationship is in the cards, and this fic is every bit as interested in that part as it is in the rest. I also love that this is a rare RJK fic told from Keeley's point of view, which gives a different perspective on this female-on-male abuse than otherwise.

Summary: When John disappears without a trace during a routine mission, people in a beleaguered Atlantis eventually have to try to move on. Rodney never completely gives up hope of finding John, and though he soldiers on to help Atlantis, a year later he still lives every day with his grief.
The story opens with a shocking discovery that may help Rodney come to terms with some truths about himself and his relationship with John, and will have consequences beyond what anyone might predict.

Reccer's Notes: This story is epic in every sense of the word -- beautiful and difficult and painful and beautiful again. John disappears, Atlantis struggles, they find a baby with John's DNA who only responds to Rodney, Rodney is a most reluctant surrogate father but adjusts, they find John but he's mostly broken and takes a long time to recover (mentally and psychically more than physically)... and through it all, Rodney has Teyla and Ronon and all of Atlantis and her people quietly supporting him and the baby and John. This is an incredible story, not to be missed. But keep tissues handy for some parts.

Summary: "But in this career path, relationships and self-identity are not prioritized. While spies are trained to be able to ingratiate themselves with others, fooling strangers is a long way from the honesty and communication that people in relationships tend to expect. Combined with an emotionally stunted bedrock, navigating these waters can be ill-advised at best and downright dangerous at worst, often with little hope of success." And yet, despite everything, Michael Westen finds himself trying anyway.

Reccer's Notes: Written for the now defunct [community profile] queer_bigbang, this fic does a good job showcasing Michael's various relationships with people in Burn Notice, even if canon retconned some of these relationships in later years (especially with Samantha and her son). These relationships are more romantic and sexual than they are in canon, but they all lead to a personal revelation specifically in this fic. And in between the romantic and sexual stuff there are scenes where Michael, whether with or without his first Miami-based team of Sam, Fiona, and himself, is seen doing the spy craft he was known for during Burn Notice's run.

Content notes: The author has a content note for implied underage sexual content (between two minors) that occurs in the first chapter of this fic. Other content notes are in the content notes listed on Dreamwidth and the fic's tags.

Summary: The weird thing was, when the knock came at his front door, he knew it would be John.

Reccer's Notes: I love this story, which diverges from canon as the expedition is forced to abandon Pegasus and return to Earth. Not due to the events of "The Return" - it goes AU from the beginning of S4. Then on top of that, something starts happening to John that doesn't, in canon. It's told from Rodney's POV, a Rodney who's living an unsatisfying, rather isolated life with a house in the desert and a job at Area 51. As well as a series of dramatic events and medical disasters, we follow Rodney and John's relationship. They're ex-best-friends - estranged at the start, both furious with each other about the traumas that forced them back to Earth - but through the unfolding disasters of this story, they reforge their friendship. It's not shippy, but it is about love 'as a friend loves another friend' - love lost and won again. It's a terrific read, very satisfying.
Note that there's a sequel you already know how this is going to end written by[personal profile] saraht who's a John/Teyla shipper, so that one's John & Rodney friendship, with John/Teyla.

Nicky and Joe are in love. Yusuf and Nicolò are most definitely not. Somehow, the four of them have just traded places...

Reccer's Notes: An intriguing -- and unsettling -- glimpse of a universe where Nicolò and Yusuf never even became friends, much less lovers and soulmates. It’s even more unsettling for the pair -- and the not-pair -- to learn how their other selves live. Lots of food for thought as the characters discuss their choices and circumstances. Reccer's Notes: Premise -- 3 geeks and a jock make friends in high school. Twenty years later, they've all fallen love with military (or ex-) men. When they try to get together for their high-school reunion, somehow they all end up on Atlantis -- where the geek and the jock who didn't know it are, of course, a surprisingly good fit. Summary: Crossover with Stargate SG-1… and is yet another TSbyBS resolution story.

Reccer's Notes: After the dissertation mess, Daniel Jackson recommends that Blair Sandburg come work at the SCG; they need his expert help to liaise / negotiate with a planet of sentinels -- that have no guides. This story shows us the descendants of possibly a Mayan culture, where the new leader is chosen from among the strong sentinels -- and Earth has a stake in which man wins.

I enjoy how the concept of sentinel/guide can be valid at any time of history or future or other planets. I love crossovers of these two shows; after all the varied cultures they've interacted with, the Stargate personnel should certainly be able to accept sentinel abilities without even lifting an eyebrow. When Jim shows up looking for Blair -- because of course a sentinel will want to ensure his guide's safety -- the SG teams incorporate him into search and rescue efforts and accept his abilities to make their job easier without comment. Being able to use his senses so openly and freely opens Jim's eyes -- and eventually leads to a new career for him and Blair.

“What, that I’m me?” Gippal knocked their shoulders together. “Well, I’m still me. Good old Gippal.”

Gippal comes across an old friend while on Machine Faction business in Luca.

Reccer's Notes: This is such a fascinating fic which perfectly captures a really interesting period for these two characters - so interesting that it makes me really surprised that I haven't seen more on it! After the Crimson Squad era, when things weren't all great but friendship was easy between them, the two have found new places for themselves in the world, and those each put considerably more barriers between them. The worldbuilding is really fun, especially in how Baralai managed to actually get himself that Praetor position, but it's the bittersweet closeness between Gippal and Baralai that really makes this fic. There's no explicit unrequited love, and we're left unsure of how things exactly were between them back in the Squad, and yet there's such a strong feeling of pining going running through it. The timing just isn't right for them to be doing even as much as they are, and they know it. Lastly, the characterisation is perfect - Baralai is somewhat femme but strong and intimidatingly determined, while for all Gippal's bluster he's just a nice guy who loves his friend. For a relatively short fic, it just fits in so much and does all of it so well!

Reccer's Notes: I recently re-read this series, of which the fic above is the central, longest work. It brought back to me how much I love this series, especially The Water Grinds the Stone, despite how angsty it is in parts. The series starts with The Taste of Apples, a genfic story where the original AR1 team are infected and subsumed by a planet-sized fungus-creature, then there's Sacrificial Drift, a mission-gone-wrong in which John and Rodney get together and have to grapple with the ramifications of the relationship when things go badly wrong. Then comes The Water Grinds the Stone, a double-novel-length saga about their continuing relationship, being intermittently separated by SGC shenanigans, the progression of their careers and Rodney's research, a worsening separation, a disastrous (all-too-believable) Declassification process, more disasters and eventual reconciliation. There's a lot of loneliness across much of the fic caused by Rodney's love of science/Atlantis keeping him there, with John increasingly bound to Earth by duty and the machinations of the SGC, but there's an eventual happy ending which is expanded on in the coda fic, The Weight of Water. It's all enormously well written and gripping, with truckloads of plot and action/adventure as well as relationship and character development. There's some of auburn's usual dystopian edge with the SGC bureaucracy very much ruthless and Machiavellian, and the political developments after Declassification are harrowing and scarily reminiscent of the past few years in America. A major work, and well worth a re-read if you haven't done so for a while.

Mei Changsu did not anticipate that his one-night stand would stubbornly refuse to give up having feelings for him.

Things go very much not according to plan, to Mei Changsu's dismay and everyone else's glee.

Theme: Getting back together

Summary: (each is just one line)
Sheppard becomes ill while returning from a mission.

Sheppard returns to what's as close to home as he can get on earth.

Sheppard tries to reunite his team and go home for real.

Reccer's Notes: A series of unfortunate events resulting from an off-world mission leaves John Sheppard with a permanent disability and eventually forces him to return to Earth. The series is about him coping with that, and then about his team reuniting with him to rescue Ronon and Teyla after shenanigans by the NID - so rather than a shippy reunion, this is about the team getting back together. Vain_glorious's characterisations are spot on, and the Jack O'Neill voice in these fics is perfect. Here's an example:
O’Neill cleared his throat. “I thought I should thank you for convincing Dr. McKay to rejoin the program.” He didn’t sound particularly grateful. “Gives HR more to do, you know. And personally I like getting the memos. It’s good reading.”
The stories are plotty, gripping and amusing by turns, and altogether an excellent read - very much recommended.

After spending a third summer together, Zhu Zanjin and Liu Haikuan reckon with their feelings for each other.

Summary: When Nicky was twenty-two, he was in love. With the world, yes, and with his own life, with the way having an Interrail Pass and some money in his pocket made him feel that anything was possible. But most of all, with Joe. With him, love was effortless. They laughed easily, they traveled together well, and they fucked like gods.
Nile never knew that version of him, the Nicky so in love that he stole Joe's t-shirt and stuffed it in his backpack, thinking he could wear it to bed and imagine Joe was still holding him. By the time he met her, Nicky had not only stopped sleeping in that shirt, he'd long-since shoved it in the back of his bottom drawer behind a spare blanket. After that, he could almost pretend it never existed.

Reccer's Notes: So good. After a breakup and 12 years apart following a glorious year of young first love, during which both men grow and change, Nicky and Joe's paths cross again. Each reaches tentatively toward the other, unsure if their feelings are still reciprocated, only hoping that maybe they can get together again. It feels so 'real' that the re-connection takes time, with hesitant fits and starts, but also feels inevitable as Joe and Nicky work to regain what they once had. Beautiful story, well worth reading.

Maybe not precisely, geographically, but he always has a sense of “present” or “away” and “present” includes a general sense of where they are in relation to each other. There is no slipping out without the other noticing for them, any more than Nicky would absentmindedly lose track of his own arms or Joe misplace his head. But now there is an absence...

Reccer's Notes: I waited till the last chapter was posted before I began to read, and it was so-o-o worth the wait. I love a good ‘characters switched between universes’ story, and this is wonderful. Summary: Five years since Joe had gotten down on one knee, the beaten silver ring he’d had made special held out, the perfect size for his finger. Five years since Nicky had looked Joe in the eye, his own wide and terrified, and said no. Five fucking years since he’d fled the party and disappeared with nothing more than a note left on their counter saying he was sorry.

Reccer's Notes: Told from Joe's POV, this 'ordinary mortal AU' story details his angsty push-pull evaluation when Nicky returns after 5 years -- they still love each other, they still want each other... but Joe doesn't know if he can overcome the deep-seated mistrust he still feels: since Nicky left once, he might leave again. While he's debating -- with the help/interference of all his friends -- Joe and Nicky have lots of delicious, smokin'-hot sex, which doesn't help his decision at all. This long, well-told, lovingly-crafted story keeps them -- and us! -- wondering until the very last scene.

Summary: John believes in miracles, in last minute saves, in the impossible. He's lived all of them. He also believes in small, random things that kill people; in the end you don't see coming, in the impossible-in-a-bad-way.

Reccer's Notes: John's living outside of Colorado Springs, deep in the woods, and trying his best not to think about why he's there, taking his pills, deleting the emails that come from Atlantis, and deflecting Mitchell's attempts to befriend him. John's sense of loss is quiet but deep, and his loneliness is echoed in the remote, woodsy atmosphere and his empty house. That is until Rodney McKay shows up on his doorstep.

John and Rodney's relationship is unexpectedly tender here, both in its intimacy and its uncertainty, and I like the way the story slowly reveals what happened and how Rodney's arrival gives John back some hope for the future.

Summary: Post-canon, Marc and Cliff meet again.

Reccer's Notes: This fandom rec has an unconventional start for me. I met David Blue (who played Cliff St. Paul) at a Stargate convention a few years back, and confessed to him that I had never watched Stargate Universe. I was, however, a fan of his from Ugly Betty, because I felt like part of his journey, as Cliff St. Paul mooning over and falling for Marc St. James, mirrored a part of my own life. David confessed that he absolutely loved playing Cliff, and that for the final season, his character was supposed to come back and reconcile with Marc, but because of his (now ex) Agent, he didn't get the chance.

I read this because I thought it would give those of us that liked Marc and Cliff some closure. But what it gave me was hope. Hope when their paths crossed again. Hope that love, once found and lost, could be found again. And hope for that happy ever after.

This fic gives us this. It's like a woven storyline that we deserved to see on the screen.

He's thrown into a political situation he really doesn't understand, Atlantis is keeping secrets from him, and—oh, yeah—his ex, Rodney McKay, really wishes he'd kiss off.

Reccer's Notes: This story has so many great elements: worldbuilding, hard sci-fi, mystery, and personal challenges not to mention this month's theme: getting back together. John and Rodney are a little more battered than usual, a little more bitter, and even less willing to talk about it. When they do start working together, they manage to batter away at the problems keeping them apart, arriving at a truce of sorts, before the daily problems of Atlantis get in their way.

Summary: After seven months of giving the government and the terrorists the slip, Rodney has to come to terms with the past and try to figure out a way that his family can have a future together.

Reccer's Notes: Rodney's living on the down-low, trying to keep himself and John's young daughter out of the hands of [a] the bad guys and [b] the government agents who didn't prevent John's death. But of course the government eventually catches up with them. John's not dead after all -- but to ensure his family's security and freedom, Rodney will need to meet with the bad guys to take them down.

This non-Stargate story swings between flashbacks of John & Rodney's comfortable 'before' life -- getting to know each other, developing a relationship -- and the tension of living a hunted life, ready to bug out at any moment, only to be faced with more danger before they can all come out the other side. It's a thoroughly satisfying tale, with several "domestic" sequels, if you're interested.

Bertie, now Lord Yaxley, doesn't know where Jeeves has been and longs to see him again. They meet when each of them are taking their young nieces to see Father Christmas. Plus dealing with the fact that her son apparently has to stop the end of the world and her ex has suddenly appeared back in her life. I love how she grapples with whether or not to trust Strickler, moving from she does because she has to, into him being the one she trusts most aside from Jim. The layout, the shapes, the movement in and out of time, the glimpses of Jim and Spock's life together, the staggered placement of the text, and then the step of Spock's boot on the Enterprise's bridge, Jim's expression, and the way he not only forgets his own name, but can't really finish Spock's either. Summary: “Pepper and I are—” Tony pauses for a fraction of a second while his brain runs rapidly through the ways he can finish that sentence. In the off again portion of our depressingly on again-off again relationship? Hopefully temporarily consciously uncoupled? On a break?

“Pregnant?” asks Steve, perking up like a dog that’s just been offered a treat, and not just any dog, one of those wholesome happy ones like a golden retriever or whatever. Maybe the guy’s just looking for any bit of good news right now, given it’s been one nasty surprise after another the past few days. Tony kind of does want to offer him a treat, or pet him, or something. That’s really not a good enough reason for what Tony says next though.

“Yeah, uh, yeah, we are.”

Reccer's Notes: This is a Tony-centric fic, with Tony and Pepper's relationship entwined in both the present and through flashbacks, seamlessly fitting in with the rest plot. There are so many parts, including the premise that made me go "Tony, no, no, Tony" but I also loved it. It is a great Captain America: Civil War rewrite, where Tony manages to find out about what Bucky did just a little sooner, and really exposes the flaws of Zemo's plan, and goes into depth of all of them handling the aftermath. The characters act like mature adults, while remaining complex and interesting. Definitely emotional at points, but the story had me gripped and I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

He’s just not sure he can handle seeing Bucky up close and in person, even after all this time. He wishes he was a better person. A more put-together person. A more over-it person, but. Well. It’s a Friday night and he’s at home drinking twelve-dollar wine by himself, staring at a little rectangle of fancy stock paper, trying to decide which tiny box he should scribble in.

Reccer's Notes: This is part of the thrill to press my cheek to series but can be read as a standalone, unless you want to read about them getting together (which I always do; the whole series is delightful). It starts with Sam and Bucky having broken up, with Steve's wedding forcing them to face one another. It has flashbacks through the course of the story, revealing the good and the bad and what went wrong, as they come together in the present. It's an emotional journey with a complex take on all the characters involved. They're both stubborn and ridiculous and yet completely in love and I loved the whole thing even when they drove me nuts.

Justin turned to Shitty. “Where the hell did this guy come from? Someone’s garage?”

...

In a world where Adam Birkholtz never went to Samwell, he loses a beer pong bet to Lardo and winds up refereeing a rec hockey game for one freshly broken-hearted Justin Oluransi. For once in his life, Justin is totally out of his league.

Reccer's Notes: You wouldn't think this fic was a breakup fic, what with Ransom and Holster's near perfect match for each other. They're pretty awesome together, and even though in this AU (Holster never went to Samwell, but everyone else did), they kind of snap together like they're meant to be, Ransom is still getting over someone and doesn't appreciate Holster for what he is. I won't give a lot away, but the breakup tugs at your heartstrings - but then the author twists fate and brings them back together. It's not perfect, but since when is anything ever perfect in a relationship?

There's some really awesome stuff in this fic, like Shitty and Lardo being peak!Shitty and peak!Lardo even though they're not in the fic all that much. And the author even managed to fit Justin's mega-fan of Tater in the fic as well, as a nod to the comic. Summary: “Derek, this is my co-worker, Will. He helps coach the Little Falconers.”

Nursey looks up and feels the punch in his chest so hard he actually takes a second to consider that it might have happened. But it didn’t. And there’s Will, his Will – no, not his Will, but still, Will – standing there, a polite smile absolutely fucking frozen on his face.

“Will, this is Derek Nurse, Chris’s boyfriend.”

Reccer's Notes: The thing about Nursey and Dex is that, while they are two characters that have some of the best dynamics from the comic, they can be complete opposites as well as idiots when it comes to their feelings. It's what makes them so special, and personally, what makes me love them so much. In this, set a few years post Frogs graduation (the year after Bitty's graduation), Dex got scared that Nursey was going to out him to his family and they broke up. Three years later, and in a casual relationship with Chowder (they used each other for sex, but neither had feelings for the other more than just friends), there's a get together when Chowder's Ex, Farmer, is getting married. And Chowder, who didn't go to Samwell, introduces Nursey to his friend Dex, not knowing they already had a past.

There's so much emotional idiocy here, and sometimes a lot to deal with. I do love that it's a kidfic, too (Dex has a kid who - surprise, surprise - looks exactly what Nursey had daydreamed what their kid would look like) that kind of melts Nursey when he meets her.

My only complaint with this fic is that it's not longer. I'd love to see some long-term stuff with these two in this AU.
