Theme: Getting Back Together, Backstory, Mutual Pining, Characters of Colour, Amnesty
Summary: Baralai was quiet for a few moments. “I wasn’t supposed to meet you today.” He glanced at him, only a quick flick of the eyes. “But I… became aware that you were in the city. I had to see for myself.”
“What, that I’m me?” Gippal knocked their shoulders together. “Well, I’m still me. Good old Gippal.”
Gippal comes across an old friend while on Machine Faction business in Luca.
Reccer's Notes: This is such a fascinating fic which perfectly captures a really interesting period for these two characters - so interesting that it makes me really surprised that I haven't seen more on it! After the Crimson Squad era, when things weren't all great but friendship was easy between them, the two have found new places for themselves in the world, and those each put considerably more barriers between them. The worldbuilding is really fun, especially in how Baralai managed to actually get himself that Praetor position, but it's the bittersweet closeness between Gippal and Baralai that really makes this fic. There's no explicit unrequited love, and we're left unsure of how things exactly were between them back in the Squad, and yet there's such a strong feeling of pining going running through it. The timing just isn't right for them to be doing even as much as they are, and they know it. Lastly, the characterisation is perfect - Baralai is somewhat femme but strong and intimidatingly determined, while for all Gippal's bluster he's just a nice guy who loves his friend. For a relatively short fic, it just fits in so much and does all of it so well!
