Theme: Time Travel

Summary: Sitting inside a dark and empty linen closet, there was only a sliver of light penetrating the tiniest of cracks, and for Sark all of that was Sydney.

Reccer's Notes: My favourite type of time travel stories are the ones where the time traveling kind of mucks everything up even worse. Such is the case here, plus you get a tiny sliver of the wonderful dynamic between Irina and Sark.

Theme: Spies and Assassins

Summary: Legato (It.): Bound together. Also: legacy.

Reccer's Notes: If you want to read about Irina being very clever and very terrifying, oh boy do I know a fic for you! I'd recommend it for all manner of reasons, but I just really love the heavy on the dialogue and overall hopeless style that the author seems to be so good at. Like a Greek tragedy but with more spies. The exploration of the relationship between Irina and Sark is probably my favourite part, but the ending is kind of insane to me too. Without spoiling anything I'll just say that Irina makes a plan and it works, and Sydney gets caught in the middle of it. Meanwhile Sark believes a lot of things that aren't true, and ends up dragging people down with him.

Length: 2 minutes

Theme: spies and assassins

Summary: I should move to a brand new city and teach myself how to die.

Reccer's Notes: The song fits Nadia fantastically, and it's a very neat look at everything that happened to her. It touches on the Rambaldi side of things wonderfully, and ending with a shot of her as a young girl makes it all seem haunting.
Content notes, in the words of the vidder: Character death, violence, torture, drugs, needles, child abuse, flashing lights

Theme: Spies & Assassins, pre-canon, backstory, friends with benefits

Summary: "If this makes me late for my wedding," Jack says grimly, "someone is going to be sorry." Set shortly before Jack Bristow marries "Laura".

Reccer's Notes: Alias had a lot of humor as well as angst and twists, and [personal profile] andraste's story captures that mixture perfectly. It's also quite hot.

Summary: Arvin Sloane, Jack Bristow and Irina Derevko through the years. Ends in the ominous two years between s2 and s3.

Reccer's Notes: Kangeiko's take on the complex, twisted and intense dynamics between the first generation of spies is just superb.

Theme: Spies & Assassins; frenemies; immortality; friends to enemies to lovers

Summary: Post-series. By a cruel trick of fate, Jack is rendered immortal along with Sloane.

What do two immortals do with their eternities? It sounds like a bad joke. It kind of is.

Reccer's Note: Arvin Sloane and the relationships he had both both Jack and Sydney were my favourite aspects of the tv show Alias. This story captures the ambiguity, the terseness and deep sense of connection despite all between Sloane and Jack beautifully.

Summary: Sydney wakes up in Lauren's body, mid-season 3.

Reccer's Notes: A real action-adventure story filled with canon-typical espionage and Rambaldi mysticism. I love how fast Jack accepts what's happened to Sydney, and the show's theme of family plays a big role here as well. It's a competence fest and makes Sark/Sydney work more than even this shipper typically sees.

Summary: [None.] Outside, it rains. She sits in the passenger's seat and, with routine precision, picks the petals off each of the dozen roses Michael had left for her this morning. He is in Prague -- with Sydney, though he hadn't disclosed that particular bit of information. She knows very well that it's the case, however. There wouldn't be roses, otherwise.

Reccer's Notes: A quiet moment featuring Lauren alone and with Sark. Lauren's a fascinating character if you look past the black hat villainy, and even if you never thought so, this fic will convince you. Short but complex and revealing.

Reccer's Notes: You may have noticed by now that I'm extremely polyfannish. I love fanfic, and although I tend to gravitate towards (and away from) certain fandoms, ultimately the quality of writing is much more important to me than what fandom it is.  You may also notice that I love awesome women. [personal profile] medie is awesome and just what I like--lots of great fic in lots of fandoms, and lots of awesome women.  Also, there can never be enough well-written genderswap in the world, and [personal profile] medie does that too.  I've only recced a few of her fics here, but there are so many more great ones you should check out.

Favorite Fanworks:

C'Thia.  Loving someone doesn't mean you understand them. Loving a Vulcan definitely means you don't. Christopher Pike's in love with his science officer, Spock might be in love with him, but that's not even remotely close to the end of the story.

Kaiidth.  She'd lived a lifetime in Spock's shadow. From the moment of their binding, she had been viewed as part and parcel to him.  Awesome T'Pring AU.

Gotham (The Just When You Think You're Out Remix).  "So let me get this straight," Angel says, "Batman got turned into a bat, a woman in fishnets turned him back, and you think your secretary is maybe a demon. That about cover it?"

Parenthetical.  After Elizabeth Weir, John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, and Ronon Dex escape from the Asurans in Lifeline, the ZPM they risked everything for is drained of power during the city's landing on a new planet. Everything that Elizabeth knows about herself could change in a heartbeat. She fears that she could endanger those the loves, so she pushes them away, but John is determined not to let her deal with this on her own. (AU of Adrift)

Q&A.  You didn't burn down your house, Mr. Wayne. Any idiot with a functioning brain can tell that for themselves.

Reccer's Notes:  [personal profile] yahtzee writes a lot of awesome fic in a lot of fandoms.  She's also adept at both het and slash.

Favorite Fanworks:

The Prophet's Right Hand.  Alternate reality: In 1972, CIA officer Jack Bristow is given an assignment to go to the Soviet Union to meet, seduce and marry KGB agent Irina Derevko.

Paralyzer.  In 1965, Erik Lehnsherr has infiltrated the NYPD for his own purposes -- but his powers make him a brilliant detective. Yet that's not why FBI agent Charles Xavier has sought him out. It's because the mysterious killer they're both trying to find is murdering people like them: other mutants.  Their search for a madman binds them together. Their inner demons may tear them apart. But the greatest danger comes when the killer they're looking for looks back ...

Break.  During their final semester at Starfleet Academy, two people who have no intention of ever changing transform each other.

Great Companions.  An awesome series of Doctor Who ficlets with the Doctor encountering various characters from classic literature.

Death Before Dusk.  (Elementary AU).  The bad news: In 111 days, an asteroid will strike the Earth in a cataclysm that promises to destroy human civilization as we know it..  The good news: There's been a murder.

Of Two Worlds.  Spock finds himself shifting between the Prime universe and his own -- for a very unexpected reason.

Enigma.  Written for the following prompt: Erik dies, or finds a reversey-time mutant, or a magical time travelling device, and wakes up in the past. This time, though, it's before he ever met Charles - in fact, it's before his mother died.

Hoop Screams.  When the Staples Center becomes infested by demons, there's only one detective agency in L.A. the Lakers can call on.  (Angel)

Summary: Alternate reality: In 1972, CIA officer Jack Bristow is given an assignment to go to the Soviet Union to meet, seduce and marry KGB agent Irina Derevko.

Reccer's Notes: This AU branches off 30 years before canon, so it should be pretty accessible even to readers who know nothing about Alias and just like spy games and weird science fictional devices. In the show, of course, KGB agent Irina seduces and marries CIA officer Jack Bristow. Yahtzee reverses the dynamic. Same fucked-up people, same fucked-up relationship, but--perhaps--a chance of a better outcome.

Summary: The story of how Jack came to marry "Laura," and the story of how Jack and Irina came together during Sydney's lost years, interwoven into their mutual search for any truth within the lies.

Reccer's Notes: I am kind of boggled to be the first person to rec Alias for this theme, since it's got canon Pretend Couple! Which, in Yahtzee's capable hands, is also a real couple, even if they resist it. I love how she writes the Spyparents, anger and lies and love all tangled together.
