Summary: Does it count as Shane Hollander walking Ilya like a dog if Ilya buckles the collar on himself and hands Hollander the leash?

Reccer's Notes: Tackytiger describes the fic as a small character piece looking at Ilya's feelings at various points in his life. It's not tagged for "pining" but to me, that's very much part of Ilya's feelings. There are dog metaphors throughout, with young Ilya longing for a dog (but knowing his father would never allow it), then, in the Rose era, Ilya longs for Shane and snatches any scrap of Shane he can. It ends at the Cottage with their relationship restored and acknowledged, but there's still a sense of Ilya being dependent on Shane's attention and affection, still feeling like a stray who got lucky. Poignant, and really well written.

Summary: Fyodor’s weak heart thuds violently within its cage of flesh and bone, ba-thump. Dazai’s knife kisses cold on the skin of their throat. They swallow, and the bob of their Adam’s apple against it draws blood.

“Alright,” Fyodor decides, “let’s find a way to die.”

// In the Decay’s aftermath, Fyodor and Dazai quietly slip through the cracks, and set on a journey.

Reccer's Notes: After Fyodor’s defeat, Dazai agrees to a double suicide instead of killing him and the two set off on an unexpected road trip. It’s a fantastic exploration of Dazai and Fyodor’s characters and their relationship. The themes of recovery, philosophy, religion, disability, gender, mental health issues, codependency, and intimacy are handled beautifully, and the writing is absolutely gorgeous <3

Summary: The Turningverse is a series of stories that interweave with both canon "West Wing" episodes and each other. Each one is self-contained, so feel free to begin anywhere you feel moved to do so.

Reccer's Notes: THE big Sam/Josh fic, and it earns all of its accolades! The author is incredibly knowledgeable about the day-to-day realities of political campaigners and White House staffers, flawlessly interspersing their own original scenes with canon. And the central relationship is so perfectly, tragically flawed: two men who are intrinsically drawn to one another, struggling to overcome the lack of privacy inherent to their position, burgeoning resentment, and some of the most heart-breakingly realistic internalised homophobia I've read in a long time. And that's not to mention the fic's version of Lisa, Sam's initial fiance, who becomes a very important character just as flawed and with just as complicated a relationship with Sam and Josh as they have with another. I devoured these fics and never wanted to stop!

However, be aware that the final fic of the series (the intended second-last part) was never fully completed. As a result, the series never reached the point where the couple gets back together for good. I recommend ending with 'Interlude for two voices' if you can't bear that; I sure stayed there for a while until I could bring myself to go on! :')

Still struggling to sort out his thoughts about the mission, he finds his attention drawn to one rookie in particular, a scrawny, unassuming runt who can't seem to stay out of trouble.

Reccer's Notes: This just works so damn well as an alternate first meeting for these two! It's such a dismal, pessimistic setting - as expected with this canon - but the way these two forge a connection, finding some degree of comfort and caring and hope - makes me really emotional! And I love the use of the book, as well! (Also somehow even though I always knew the Hal connection to 2001: A Space Odyssey I never noticed how Dave fits in to it, too?! 🤦)

Summary: Rodney had extorted a promise from John to not get recruited into SG-1 while he was on temporary re-assignment to the SGC. As John finished reciting his marriage vows from the crib-sheet Mitchell had handed him, he suspected Rodney would never let him live this down.

Reccer's Notes: With Atlantis stuck in San Francisco, John goes out with SG1 on a mission that needs his gene, but the local Ori-worshipers require those entering the sanctum (where there may be ZPMs) to be married. So John and Vala get hitched, and are able to trade for not one but three ZPMs, which is just as well as later in the story John desperately needs both Vala and the ZPM-power. The story focuses on John and Vala's friendship which develops after their marriage and despite John returning to Pegasus, then later deepens into something more. Cam is initially a dick due to jealousy as he and John had a past fling, but he gets his head out of his ass. The John/Vala relationship is wonderfully written and we're left in the end with it still being an little ambiguous (this is Vala, after all), but definitely hopeful. A lovely read.

As a twist on the title, they all do or did want Teyla, even if they can't pursue that attraction for a number of reasons. It's also unclear if Teyla reciprocates any of their feelings. Summary: Just Eddie, musing on hair. And lesbians. And herself, a bit. (She's meant to be thinking about the case.)
Set in a lull (???) in episode five, or thereabouts.

Reccer's Notes: The detective partnership of Eddie and Dulcie is central to Deadloch, and it's "enemies to friends" in canon, but with a tantalising hint of maybe-polyamory at the very end of the show. In this story, Eddie thinks about lesbians in general (Deadloch's full of lesbians), her odd fascination with Dulcie's long, thick, hair, and remembers a female friendship from her teens. It's a believable character study where we understand a bit more about Eddie and see the beginnings of her attraction to Dulcie, even if Eddie's still mostly in denial. Interesting, and well written, with great characterisation and Eddie's usual hilarious and colourful turns of phrase.

Theme: Ambiguous relationships, Amnesia, AU, AU: fork in the road, Bodyswap

Summary: A head injury changes Sheppard's reality.

Reccer's Notes: Sheppard falls and sustains a serious head injury off-world, and on waking, discovers he's not in Atlantis but in the SGC infirmary, and married to Teyla. He also discovers that everyone else recalls a completely different history for the past five years, and they think he's brain damaged, crazy, or both. This takes a fork in the road premise and runs with it, showing John's bafflement and refusal to accept that what he knows and remembers is a delusional result of the injury, despite all his bosses, friends, doctors and Heightmeyer telling him so. Of course, everyone thinks he's being a bastard to Teyla by not recognising her as his wife and recalling their marriage, but he remembers her only as his friend and teammate. He does love her, though, so his relationship with her is ambivalent, complex, and full of angst. Eventually, matters become clearer, and although John and Rodney aren't friends in this alternate reality (in fact Rodney actively dislikes him), Rodney nonetheless helps find John a way to set things right. It's left unresolved, with us not knowing whether John succeeds, so be aware of that if it might bother you. It's a powerful story of John trying to cope when everyone around him believes one thing and he's clinging to something very different, unable to be Teyla's husband while trying not to hurt her too badly. A great read - essentially Gen despite the relationship with Teyla, as it's not canon-John who's married to her.

Reccer's Notes: There's a solo canoe trip, then a creeping awareness of illness, and then Nolan paddles across the lake to find help. He finds Travis and, better yet, Travis's thermometer. This story is very loosely hockey RPF but requires knowledge of canon only to the degree that it might explain a few lines. I love an altered POV, and I love how here we get both Nolan's feverish, sulky confusion and glimpses of Travis's harried affection in the aftermath. I'm reccing it for Ambiguous Relationships because the author's inspired combination of meet-ugly--the tags include "hot girl appendicitis"--and intimacy signifiers fills me with glee. Are they trauma-bonded immediate best friends? Strangers to lovers? Future canoe pals? Neither I nor either them know.

Theme: ambiguous relationships, friendship, epistolary

Summary: After the events of "The Hive," Rodney write a letter.

Reccer's Notes: This is a classic in SGA fandom, and a brilliantly executed epistolary work. The first version is a scanned letter which I've tagged as fanart because making something this detailed and realistic is absolutely art, coffee mug stains, hilarious addendums, typos, and all. There's also a text-only version. This is Rodney, still detoxing from the enzyme, writing furiously to John to berate him for his actions in "Lost Boys" and "The Hive". The letter perfectly captures Rodney's rage and desperation, his jumbled thoughts and distractibility, and his intense feelings for John. It's funny in places but also very poignant, especially where Rodney writes about John's need to save Ford. The fic's tagged as Gen, but the strength of Rodney's feelings hints at a closer relationship, at least on Rodney's part. In fact, in pocky_slash's initial fic "Stutter" (very much worth reading) of which this is a remix, Rodney's feelings are clarified. It's an extraordinary creation, rings very true to character, and oh, the wonderful line: "THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH WINGDINGS IN THE WORLD FOR MY RAGE."

Reccer's Notes: The title says friendship, but the story contains elements that make the relationship verge on something else—though not quite. I find this to be true with most of [archiveofourown.org profile] dracofiend's writing. Their style is particularly suited to this relationship, which can be read in so many ways. I always appreciate Draco's precise description, understated humor, and restrained approach to conveying emotions. This author so accurately captures the voices and temperaments of the characters. In this case, Jim is immature and funny, and doesn't want to admit feelings. Spock is tolerant and reserved and doesn't want to admit feelings. Bonus: the other crew members appear and do their awesome thing.

Reccer's Notes: The depiction of McMurdo in this Sheppard-centric story is excellent as the author did several RL stints down there on the ice. We see John's life in Antarctica, culminating in the events at the start of the Pilot, and we see him encountering Rodney. There's no real relationship between them in this, just a hint of some interest on John's part, at the end. It's an interesting read, especially if you're a Sheppard fan.

Reccer's Notes: About halfway through, I got confused about why there was no relationship tagged, but in the end it all became clear. This is just so perfectly in the style of the show it really feels like it could've happened in canon, all the way up to the ending. I really love West Wing fic that captures the state of queer politics at the time and this does that flawlessly - a true reminder both of how much and how little has changed since 2000.

Summary:

Transmigrating into the stallion novel he hates most is bad enough, but why did it have to be into the body of one of the protagonist's wives? Shen Yuan spends exactly two months dealing with harem intrigues, sullen maids and his husband utterly ignoring him before he decides to go on an extended holiday. Very extended. Surely no one will care if he just forgets about being married and becomes a cultivator, right?

(In which Luo Binghe goes on a quest to bring his errant husband home and Shen Yuan takes him on an adventure instead.)

Reccer's Notes: When I read the ambiguous relationship theme, I thought of this fic immediately. Are they married? Yes! But they're not together or even the people that got married to each other originally, and yet they probably love each other more than the people that got married to each other originally. The relationship is so fun and interesting and well fleshed out. And more than that, the journey they go on individually both fits with the development perfectly and makes them seem like people independent of each other

But there's considerable flirting on Radek's part and although Ronon is initially nervous like the wounded animal he is (after seven years of running), there's a suggestion at the end that he might be interested. Reccer's Notes: A perfect combination of a very cracky fandomy premise with some very earnest and believable slow-burn romance! The fic gets VERY metafictiony very quickly (complete with de-fictionalised versions of some of the 'Charmed and Dangerous' fics Justin wrote in-universe, and even reviews by fellow 'Jalan' shippers!) and will be a massive nostalgia trip for anyone who was in fandom circa 2010!
