Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Richard Woolsey, Evan Lorne, Carson Beckett, Radek Zelenka, Bates
Rating: M
Length: 22,475
Creator Links: ivorysilk on AO3
Themes: Wings, First time, AU: dystopia
Summary: "The secret of flight is this -- you have to do it immediately, before your body realizes it is defying the laws.” ― Michael Cunningham, ‘A Home at the End of the World'
AU. Born into a world where a rare genetic mutation means that some people are born with wings, John has succeeded in hiding his “shifter” status for all of his adult life. According to U.S. law, exposure of his true nature must strip him of every human right. When it's a choice between keeping his secret or Rodney's life, the choice is easy for John; it's the aftermath of that revelation that will change everything for not only John, but all of Atlantis.
Reccer's Notes: This is quite angsty in places as it's set in a dystopia where winged shifter humans are discriminated against in the USA, also Carson doesn't come off too well. Rodney accidentally falls off a cliff on a mission and John has to manifest his carefully concealed wings to save him - with inevitable consequences. It's a gripping story, and, of course, the team and their close friends triumph to some degree over the forces of evil, as do John and Rodney's feelings.
