Reccer's Notes: Lovely details, great characterization

Theme: Genderfuck
Summary: When Gerard realizes that he’ll never get with Lyn-Z after his friends let him know she’s into girls, there’s only one possible course of action: dress in drag and join her punk rock Dolly Parton cover band in hopes of wooing her. High school AU.

Reccer's Notes: This one is amazing. Apart from the wonderful character development and the sheer hilarity of Gerard trying to join an all-girl punk rock cover band (he is a hot girl: no one is surprised)--I am honestly regretful that I can't listen to the songs. Every time I read this--which is often--I get to the end, grinning idiotically, and wish I could hunt for this band on youtube.

Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski

Length: 3,039 words

Author Links: [livejournal.com profile] arrow00

Theme: Gendefuck

Summary: Fraser is more than a little odd.

Reccer's Notes: So the first thing you have to know is that [livejournal.com profile] arrow00's fics work on several levels without taking away from the story or making the characters behave OOC.

This fic begins with a little background story for Fraser: from his awareness of how much of an outsider he is in the here and now to further back in his life and the impressions that his grandmother gave him on basic human sexuality.

From there, the story goes into a meeting with an informant that has Fraser's assumptions on who RayK is get turned over several times. This leads to an interesting conversation where Fraser tells RayK about doing drag for a case. It's also a scorching first time fic and a character study in which Fraser is taught that being a 'freak' is a wonderful thing.

Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, past Benton Fraser/Victoria Metcalf

Length: 7,006 words

Author Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] 2corbies

Theme: Genderfuck

Summary: Fraser cradles Ray in his arms and wonders, desperately, what he is going to do when Ray wakes up. He was certain to notice the breasts.

Reccer's Notes: This is one of the best due South fics out there bar none. Written for last year's LGTB Fest, [personal profile] 2corbies takes the reader through an intense, heartbreaking but eventually uplifting journey. We follow Benton Fraser from the time he realized he'd been born in the wrong body all the way through a specific moment during his and RayK's quest for the Hand of Franklin during which, in order to save RayK's life, he has to reveal that he is a pre-op FtM.

There is enough room in regular dS canon for Fraser's queerness, but in this story the perspective shifts and yet it still makes sense without mocking Fraser's real gender and the steps he's taken to achieve his true self.

On top of all that, there's RayK who shows Fraser how much of a duet they really are.

It's a story I reread often and it always leaves me in a state of reflection. Just like the best fanfics tend to do.

Finally, for all its focus on due South canon, it certainly is a story that I believe would still be a great read for those who aren't in the fandom.
